I think Torres was a bigger signing than Suarez at the time. Torres was established and sought after by a host of top clubs. Suarez hadn't played in a top five league and was mainly known because of the handball in the world cup.
Soree bose I put "sort after" but hesitated, didn't look right but thought **** it, I posted it anyway
VvD was massive and already recognised as one of the best defenders in the world. Alisson was Big, more so with hindsight. Wirtz is on a similar level of signing imo; young, exciting and quality. I got excited about Suarez the first time that I saw him play for us…..I hope that Wirtz does the same
See, I don't think VVD was. Potentially, yes, but I don’t think that recognition truly came until he joined us and did it a level bigger than Soton and Celtic. Allison a bit more at Roma, but I would still contend that Wirtz is now more established than Allison was. But maybe that's because I'm in Germany.
everyone wants Virgil. We got him. I can recall Klopp talking about his ‘quality’ almost in disbelief that we signed him. But yeah, we had much more exposure to him and less so for Alisson and now Wirtz, so I think that you’re right. Where do you live btw? I spend 5 years in Dortmund as a kid. Loved Germany. Still do.
Just outside Düsseldorf. Also lived in Bochum for a while and had some work in Dortmund, so I used to be in Dortmund regularly. I was also stood in the yellow wall for a cup tie against Hertha Berlin; Voronin played for Hertha, on loan from us.
On the above. Context imo is vital. Torres was the first megastar signing of the real Internet eta. Torres arrived at a time where Gerrard stayed and was prime, rafa won the cl and g&h were lying about stadiums etc. It was hysteria and all the rival fans were raging enough to say he couldn't score goals and was ****. Suarez arrived as thr club was broken by g&h. Hodgson has happened, Torres wanted put he was already in trouble. Klopp was a bigger signing and there was more hysteria over him imo than any one signing he made. We are all #old Names don't cut it. Perfoamcne is what gets our attention
Heitinga looks set to leave to take over Ajax job. Fair play to him there. hopefully doesn’t impact us too much
Solid deal all round. In theory 3rd choice and despite seemingly a really good guy round the place, £10m is reasonable for him and Leeds get a prem proven player if he goes he’ll get a brilliant reaction when he rocks up at Anfield
the rumoured fee for Wirtz keeps growing and have to say if over £100m i'm not convinced he is worth it to us .
