I think this is one of the problems also with having older Popes, it was Pope John Paul II that denied women access in 1994, he was 58 years old at the time. I think it would help if it was governed by younger minds and ones that include women, this would hopefully also aid in repairing the damage caused by past abuse cases and make the church appear more welcoming. I'm sure someone would give me a religious reason why it can't be so, but I think if it was done for the right reasons it would help in a modern world to create a better image of the church. Afterall whether it be Catholic or CoE, something needs to be done to stop what I see as the erosion of Christianity.
