Don’t disagree with the sentiment around what do people expect in a short span of time. But I certainly didn’t expect it to be pensions and PIP they went for as the Labour Party all whilst getting into bed with the likes of Black Rock and refusing to actually challenge the establishment and take the power away from the equity firms that own all the infrastructure in the country. It’s all culture war nonsense, asylum seekers/illegal immigration is just one of many distraction topics used to keep everyone from talking about who’s really leeching off the general population.

Nationalisation of key utilities and rail has wide cross-party support amongst voters, even a lot of Tories and Reform voters. The Thatcherite ideology of selling off the family silver to the private sector just isn’t popular and hasn’t been for decades.

Whether it’s financially feasible is another question but I think it’s fair to say most people in the UK would prefer water, energy and rail brought into public ownership.

Maybe. Personally, I couldn’t give less of a **** about the NHS as an institution but I also don’t want the American system. A French, German or Dutch model would suit our country’s population size and demographic better than universal single-payer. Universal single-payer is only really sustainable and efficient in countries with relatively small populations that have high tax burdens across the board like in Scandinavia.

We can’t sustain a healthcare system that is free at the point of use by anyone in a country with an ageing population of nearly 70 million and a significant minority of people who pay little to no income taxes. It doesn’t work. We can’t just keep chucking money at it. NHS spending went up every year to record levels under the ‘anti-NHS’ Tories. No amount of money will make the NHS ‘better’, only a new system.

The people who do speak properly definitely don’t represent us they are a sham, at the very least he’s a local lad who’s bled for the area.

That should hold more weight then being able to speak like the Etonian public school boys.

You are spouting ill informed BS. He said he wanted a system like France. Which works a lot better than ours. Similar system in Holland and elsewhere. Labour then start spouting about American prices and the gullible and ill informed lap it up.

It’s irrelevant if he’s going to be incompetent. Your first sentence is populism 101. May as well because he’s from Hull and represented us as a boxer. Yeah that doesn’t mean he’s capable of dealing with issues in a deprived community.

We can’t second guess the competency of a Mayor who hasn’t started yet.

Bled for Hull? There are plenty of people who’ve done significantly more for the area than Luke Campbell and I’d still think they might make rubbish mayors.

Representing people in this role is much more than about being ‘like’ the people who live there. It’s about being persuasive and attracting opportunities to improve things.

no but the one before him haven’t been either, insanity is choosing the same thing and expecting different results. If he’s garbo he’s garbo. Only one way for any of our assumptions to be verified.

Not really sure what the point of the position even is. West Yorkshire got one back when I lived over there and I struggle to recall anything she did. The roads and public transport are still as manic as ever over there. Couldn't get a doctors appointment. All the usual complaints are still there.

You're obviously too young to remember the total shambles the nationalised industries were in the 70s - massively subsidised by the taxpayer, always on strike and totally inefficient - I worked in the power sector at the time, as soon as the power stations were privatised, staff numbers fell from around 1600 at a 2000 mw power station to about 400 - and nobody could tell the difference except the safety records improved drastically and costs reduced significantly and power prices came down - so don't run away with the idea that nationalising everything will make things better, it most definitely won't - just look at the mess the NHS is in - claiming its underfunded means more money being pumped in and exactly the same will be said about water, electricity etc - then we will have gone full circle back to the taxpayer paying for inefficient, union run monoliths lapping up billions and billions of tax payers money - what we have isn't perfect but going back to the seventies isn't 'progressive' but very much regressive

Id prefer Hull and East Yorkshire authorities to merge and the leader to be the ‘mayor’ but I think that’d be controversial in Swanland.

Agree with the theory, but as an East Riding resident, I genuinely don't see the advantage of doing so.
