The only logical conclusion I can come to is what's called a microwave hotspot.

 

My microwave packed in last year, was planning on replacing it but we ain't missed it at all tbh and realised the most thing it was used for was re heating cold cups of tea

 

I’m at work, I don’t have a microwave at home so not really familiar with them.
