That's a lot of years of net losses to make up.
Though I may be mis-remembering what he said.
Granted for punters it's about enjoying the betting itself, not just whether you end up in or out of pocket.
But that isn't true of the bookies, who never lose in the end.

Regular punters will let you know when they have a good day but not so much after a bad day.
The key is to see getting money back as a bonus.
