Bit like saying you'll pay the same for a ten year old car as you would for a brand new one because it's still performing despite statistics suggesting it would start to decline in performance from eight years old. You just wouldn't.

We wouldn't be paying him for what he's already done, that's history. The contract would be for what he'll do in the next two or three years.

    Certainly worth the same wage.

We are talking 33 to 35 not past that.

The leadership alone is worth the wage never mind 65% of your goals.

If carragher can stand up and say lfc need a new striker, lb and midfielder just for the first team then how on earth do lfc think they can also get a rb, cb and rw as well out of 50mil net.

Depends who we buy really, doesn’t it? If we buy players on £100k/week and we lose players on, for example, a combined £1m a week, then that’s a net £700k a week saving. Consider that you can amortise contracts over, say 5 year contracts, and you can spend over £180m just by recruiting on a lower salary - would they be good enough? Who knows. You can throw your £50m net on top of that if you want. One thing is for sure, it’s a major rebuild and we need some recruitment magic to not go backwards (a lot). Personally, I would move heaven and earth to keep VvD. Then hope Salah realises that we cannot compete with Sandi and stays anyway. Otherwise we are destined for some ‘building’ years.

    Here is the issue.

    A) diaz contract out in 2027. Not getting signed. Likely to be sold. One we wanted done

    B) konate contract expired 2026 not getting signed. A matter of extreme urgency.

    C) Robertson contract expiry 2026. Do we want to renew?

    D) kelleher contract expires 2026. Will certainly not sign a new deal.

I'm not going to go into all the other 2027 contracts like jota or alisson but that is 2 years away.

In short if we want to maintain a squad but an affordable one we can either gamble on buying a lot of players willing to play for 100k or we can reward players who have proved good enough to play at the top.

I am sure salah doesn't expect us to compete with saudi.

He got 350k a week when he could have gone 3 years ago for 500k or 1mil a week if he wanted it.

He can still go for 1mik a week now. He doesn't want to. Give him 350k a week and have some confidence his dedication will carry him through to 35.

Same for vvd. Decide if he is worth 250k a week for 2 years. (Or whatever) basically what Maguire is on if utd are in cl ffs.

A little bit the same but less so for trent. Is he worth 250k a week? He will dorve the others wages more than the other 2.

If we are seriously looking at the squad

Alisson. 2027. Probably going to run down
    Kelleher. Marmadashvilli replaces him.
Jaros. Out of contract nobody talking about him.

    Trent out of contract.
    Bradley. Worrying glass like.

    Robertson..aging rapidly
Tsimiaks Nowhere near good enough and nearly 30.

    Gomez. Glass.
    Konate. Running down contract
    Vvd out of contract.
Quansah. Good and seems to have earned a little respect.

    Gravenberch. Quality
    Macallister quality but slow.
    Szoboszlai. Quality but inconsistent
    Endo. Not rated.
    Jones. Inconsistent, injury prone.
    Elliott. Not rated.
    Morton. Not rated.

    Diaz contract running down
    Gakpo. First choice.
    Jota. Made of glass
    Nunez not rated.
    Salah out of contract
Chiesa not up to it at all. No pace.

If you are as harsh as me then you have to be thinking vvd and salah in particular simply cant be let go now via penny pinching as there's a lot of work to do to improve this side.

We ought to be pleased we got to a league cup final and are in the cl space this season. We are delighted we are top by a distance and won't even need 80 points possibly to win the thing but lets not buy the bullshit best side in Europe stuff.

When the sharp end of the season hits the big boys come on strong. We have fought hard recently and not lost but the best side in Europe would be about 20points clear right now in this league and looking to win the cl as main focus.

We've scope to improve our first team.big time. We won't do thst but losing the best two players over 50k a week apiece.

I'm delighted we've 1.5 hands on the premier league trophy for no 20. I can still see what the next stage is going to be like.

Slot will want certain things for next year and hughes needs to start ponying up.

One thing to bear in mind is that there's been no AFCON this season, but it will be next season. Salah tended to fade off in each of the last two AFCON seasons.

If he does sign a new contract he's gonna have to settle for being rotated this time round.

Well, if his numbers were worse than the year before than yes, I can understand wanting to offer a slightly lower Salary, but just look at his numbers this season, it’s the opposite.

Not wanting to sound like the media, but... maybe he's over performing to get a contract?

Not like it's not happened before.

It doesn't mean it's the only thing he's thinking of, it's just extra motivation.

Salah has a terrible January record but not in the season's his contract renewal is being discussed.

That plus the world Cup could be on their minds but I'd take August to December at the rate he is going now no bother.

Yes he should be knowing rotation is coming etc and he should be retiring internationally after the world cup.

But I don't think those topics alone should be driving a bad decision.

We don't know if he asked for more than 350k we only hear he was offered less than it.

Only time will tell but the tone from lfc will be telling. If they are scrambling to justify themselves I won't be believing one word out of them as they've form for porky pies when it suits.

We need to see where the players end up.

Mane left, not mane want led him to go but I was happy at the time as his pace was gone but his down fall was absolutely spectacular.

I was happy for firmino to go as he couldn't stay fit.

Salah has become regular paced and is so far absolutely bullet proof in fitness terms. If I am simply looking forward 2 years I can certainly see that afcon impact but I can't see his dedication drop nor his desire to win. It comes down to wondering if he will slow down rapidly.or not.

I can see him not tracking back thst much already. Maybe that is a factor.

Tbh, I think this is all moot. I reckon he's already agreed a new deal anyway

    Let's look at history.

    Salah signed in 2017.
He was immediately given a new deal in 2018.
Salah contract was signed in summer 2022 with 1 year left (3 years)

    Salah goals and assists.

    2017/18 42
    2018/19 30
    2019/20 29
    2020/21 27
    2021/22 36
    2022/23 31
    2023/24 28
    2024/25 41*

2021/22 just happens to be a season where lfc nearly won the quad so a team in form.might explain ths uptick.

Really he is a stellar performer over time so it's hard to make a case thst he is performing this way to get a new deal or whether slot formation has suited him more that trying to press and track for klopp.

Again would a lot of clubs pay 350k a week to get 20 league goals never mind assists? I would say there are a lot of teams more than willing.

This is about whether a 35 year old salah is worth 18million to us in wages. I would contend he is highly likely to still be worth it.

No AFCON, the World Cup scheduling, new contract negotiations and change to his role within the team are all contributing factors to his stats upturn this season

One unique thing about MO Salah is, he hardly gets injured.

A massive, massive win this one. Loved the cheeky corner routine for the opener.

Thanks to Dribs for getting us back to winning ways ;)
