I would humbly suggest you actually research the history between Ukraine and Russia, and I don't mean from the msm.
The territories Putin has occupied are very, very Pro Russia. They speak Russian and vote 90+% for pro Russian candidates.
You will read that these elections are rigged by Russia but all you hear is from Kiev, which has historically been more aligned with Europe.
The fighting in these regions has been going far longer than the Russian invasion.

My Ukranian family are Russian speaking but that made no difference as they were bombed out of their houses in Kharkiv having to flee for their lives under the cover of darkness. A lot of these Russian speaking areas you mention that are now occupied by them were brought in to take them over. Nothing is always as clear as it looks sadly.
