I like what Barmby says where he wants Koren to play (See todays HDM), most fans want him in a central role too where he has more influence on the game and makes the team tick.
Our Nick is beginning to show his worth I hope he can keep it up. Please don't make me eat my words . I usually have to.

    Koren

    There you go, Charles!

I said a long while ago that Koren is a problem because of his unique style and importance. If you pplay him in the role best suited to him you have to build the side and formation around him.

Pearson never managed to do that but Barmby's 4-2-3-1 has successfully managed to produce a formation that lets Koren be in HIS ideal position, the centre of the three attacking midfielders.

Well done Nick, it's VERY reassuring to know you have the tactical knowse to do the job.

HULL City caretaker boss Nick Barmby wants to open contract talks with Robert Koren to ensure the midfielder remains at the KC Stadium.

Koren has been in inspired form in recent weeks and was again the hero of the hour when snatching a late winner in the Tigers' 2-1 victory over Leicester on Saturday.

The Slovenian's current deal expires at the end of the season, but Barmby has made it clear efforts will be made to keep him with City.

"Whether it's as a manager or a player, you want Robbie Koren to stay," Barmby told the Mail.

"We'll definitely be sitting down and hopefully addressing that.

"Robbie has been fantastic since he's been here, he's a great fella and a great professional. More importantly, he's a match-winner."

Having scored five goals already this term, with only Matty Fryatt netting more, Koren has underlined his significant value to the Tigers.

All-important strikes against Portsmouth, Watford and Leicester at the KC Stadium have brought an additional six points to City's tally.

The midfield talisman will again take on a pivotal creative role when the Tigers host Birmingham tomorrow night and Barmby knows he boasts a man in form.

"In the past he's played out wide in the majority of games," said Barmby.

"He can play out there because he's what I'd call a proper footballer. He can play in numerous positions.

"But he can influence games more from a central role and we're reaping the rewards of him coming inside.

"You can see what he brings to the team on the ball and his work-rate has been very good as well.

"Technically, he's a very clever footballer who causes teams problems when he drifts into space.

"It's no coincidence that since he's drifted in centrally we've seen the real Robbie Koren."

With only limited options at his disposal, Barmby is unlikely to change his side, who could move up to sixth in the Championship with a win tomorrow..

The City ranks will soon be bolstered by Richard Garcia and Seyi Olofinjana, though, as they continue their comebacks from knee surgery.

City hope to arrange a behind-closed-doors game this week for the pair and that could pave the way for Garcia to return either at Coventry this weekend or at home to Millwall on December 17.

"They both did well in the game last week," said Barmby.

"The intensity of the game was good, which was pleasing, because you need to up fitness levels.

"They're looking good and working hard. They benefited a great deal from it and have another game this week.

"Garc will probably come into contention after that, but Olly probably needs another game or two."

With Garcia still only on a short-term contract, Barmby has assured the Australian will be urged to sign a fresh deal.

"The main thing is that Garc gets himself fit," he said.

"But we'll definitely sit down and address that."

I think for Koren if he has an intention to stay with us, then now is a good time for him to negotiate a new deal, as he is playing well and can probably get the best contract conditions at this time.

I'd think so.......hopefully there's not too much to be read into his non-committal words of the other day, and he was just starting to 'play his cards'.

Many people on this forum not so long ago were suggesting Koren is best out wide, I hope recent performances have proved all doubters wrong.

At that time his best position probably was out wide. The reason for that was that when he played in the middle he did so in a standard 442. The result of that was that his lack of defensive ability and our style of playing wide meant that when we lost the ball we were often overrun in the centre-circle.

The difference now is that he has two defensive midfielders playing behind him which means he is now free to do his thing.

This is the whole point. Barmby has found a formation that allows Koren to do what he is best at. Pearson failed to do that and always had to play him in a wide position.

Not wanting to big up NP, I think you will find it was actually he who played that formation against West Ham in his last game in charge for us, and allowed Koren to play in the role he is currently playing so well in, and NB has just kept that going.

Of course against Leicester on Sat NB pushed Koren wide a bit more but that was because he was concerned NP knew what system we would play and would stick someone out on the wing to exploit that, now that shows what a good tactical manager NB has the ability to become.

This is absolutely correct; it's good to see NB pushing for a new contract for him now, let's hope it's as good as we can offer and good enough to fight off other behind the scenes "whispering" offers.

Don't want to get in a tug of war offer v offer situation if we are building around him.

That's how I see it, he wants to give himself the best bargaining position.

I thought we started that game as a 442 with Fryatt and Adebols up front?!?!?!

It may have gone to a more free role for Koren when Adebola went off early in the second half but I actually think Pearson had his mind on other things in that game as I couldn't figure out what he was trying to achieve tactically.

After a few of us expected him to leave last summer it's great to see Koren showing his class and winning us points, it's players like Koren that can get you points from games like Saturday. He seems to be enjoying himself here at present and will hopefully sign an extended contract here.

No - we played 4-3-3 with Adebola up top and Fryatt and McLean either side of him, Koren in the hole and McKenna and Evans holding.

koren played centrallly in a 4-4-2 at home to cardiff and away at brighton, 2 of the best performances under pearson with positive results...
he did start to realise it near the end, shame it took him over a year to work out what was obvious...barmby has looked to build the team around his best player from the off, a sensible decision, you could always see the way barmby and koren linked up together when on the pitch at the sametime, clearly on the same wavelength.

It's great to see Nickys man-management and tactics getting the best out of Koren, the fans pay to see players like this expressing themselves

credit to Nicky Barmby for this. Both Koren and Fryatt have both upped there game since NP left.

who would not want to play for Nicky Barmby eh ? hence why his phone is red hot from players and agents.
