The press did not like the fact that Elton chose GT over Bobby Moore because that seemed to be disrespectful to an England legend and a strange choice make for a club that wanted to be successful so his appointment seemed strange to everyone for many different reasons
Then as now it had absolutely sod all to do with the press. They are there to report news, not pass off their ill-informed opinions as something of importance.

GT was leaving Lincoln anyway and was on his way to West Brom, that was the strange thing about that, Don Revie told Elton to approach GT and Ken Furphy told GT it was worth at least speaking to Elton because he was a new Chairman who was ambitious, The rest is history

I think it was a bit more specific - and personal. The Daily mail chief (?) football writer was a personal friend of Bobby Moore , and the appoitment would have been a terrific scoop for him, the Mail. He was so furious , he set his sights against WFC from that moment. The rest, thay say, is history, as recorded in his continuous diatribe against us. And it continues on !

Jeff Powell wasn’t it …

I believe Bobby Moore did have a couple of management jobs so wasn’t like he was totally forgotten about .

Unfortunately died very young even at 51 I think so was never really involved in football after finishing playing was he in terms of an ambassador role?

ant to mention his name and then receive a 'cease and desist' letter from whoever !

Same player missed 2 penalties for Sunderland or rather they were saved by Trafford of Burnley .

TBF the Black cats players and fans consoled the striker involved .

Just think of the abuses and criticism one of ours would get from some !

Cardiff now leading 3-0 against Swansea. It makes Watford's draw there now look a lot better than it seemed at the time on Tuesday (despite the dreadful standard of football).
