Sky Sports News said:
Former Brazil captain Socrates has passed away in a Sao Paulo hospital at the age of 57 after suffering an intestinal infection.

Socrates fell ill during a meal on Thursday and was taken to hospital with a suspected case of food poisoning, before being placed in intensive care after it was discovered he had suffered septic shock.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It was the third time in four months that Socrates, who leaves behind a wife and six sons, had been treated at an intensive care unit since alcohol abuse caused his stomach to haemorrhage in August.

Legend Socrates dies aged 57

Revered

He spent 17 days in hospital in September but had been hoping his health would stabilise ahead of a liver transplant.

Socrates enjoyed a distinguished playing career and represented Corinthians, Botafogo, Fiorentina, Flamengo and Santos as well as Brazil.

A wonderfully skilful midfielder, Socrates made 60 appearances for his country and scored 22 times, captaining the revered 1982 World Cup team.

In 2004, more than a decade after retiring, Socrates made a shock appearance for Northern Counties East Football League side Garforth Town, coming on as a substitute against Tadcaster Albion.

Fantastic footballer. RIP

Legend. Didn't get to see him play in his time but the highlights vids I've seen he looks so graceful and languid, scored and set up some amazing goals and was captain of '82's legendary Brazil side. Not only this, but he was very vocal in the campaign to bring down Brazil's military dictatorship founding the official Democracy Movement at his club Corinthians, and by all accounts was a very intelligent man.

Precisely why I felt he deserved a thread on here.

Know very little of him, but sounds like a right character from what people are saying. (epitomized by the fact I had a ssumed this news must be nearly two and a half thousands years old, until I thought a little more)

RIP Socrates, best wishes to his family.

You lot didnt condemn this did you!!! Ok to ake the piiss out of a dead footballer who didnt play for newcastle then is it~?

To be honest, I would've if I hadn't just read it now. Bang out of order to make that sort of comment about someone who has just died, but at the same time, you shouldn't be using it for point scoring purposes.
