The thing there is all would have needed a like-for-like replacement, for example selling Dier would have meant we'd spend a chunk of the fee buying a new DM, while cashing in on Eriksen or Dele would have needed a new AM signed etc etc so there wouldn't be the squad refresh people assume

There only real moment where hindsight is a bugger is Andrew Robertson moving to Liverpool the summer Man Utd were reportedly sniffing around Danny Rose, as that was about the only time we could have cashed in and been left with something like £30-35m of the fee to invest elsewhere

Coutinho yes. But that was inflated oil money... Pool got very lucky with having an asset available just as PSG decided to spend big and donate half of France's GDP to Barcelona - who then had to go and spunk big money to appease their fans. Up step Liverpool with Coutinho.

But anyway, this is how they spunked the Suarez money so that's definitely not true:

Your bale money wasn't the worst. All of them liverpool players were flops.

The thing is that would teach all the wrong lessons

Our current abysmal form comes down to having approximately half the first team out injured, much like the Saudis had an abysmal run of form last season when they had an injury crisis, so outside of investing in a little more depth and/or trusting the youngsters to step up there's no real lesson to be learned compared to, say, Palace or Brentford being dragged into a relegation scrap

It's just all that adrenalin rush when we kick off at Brighton, having to secure at least a point to stay up. I know, they have finally pushed me over the edge... <laugh> <laugh> <laugh>

I wish the injuries were the only reason for abysmal form, but losses to Newcastle (away), Arsenal, Brighton and Ipswich plus the draw at Leicester all had very strong lineups, so points to more than just the current injury crisis.

A fair few of those have extenuating circumstances

Leicester - starting with an obviously rusty Bentancur and Udogie
Newcastle away - no strikers available, compounded by Johnson having a mare
Arsenal - keeper assaulted during a corner (which happens an awful lot in Arsenal matches...)
Ipswich - Mickey Van injured, which does seriously affect our buildup play

There's certainly a few dropped points where there weren't extenuating circumstances as to why - Palace and Brighton the most obvious, the latter clearly down to lack of game management in the second half - but two or three matches is a far different conversation from 6-8
