I think a lot of that has come about because of a culture of secrecy in places like the Church, Football/Sport, and Media celebrities. And when organisations do find out, they've been more concerned about loss of reputation and have tried to sweep it under the carpet, instead of dealing with the perpetrators.

In the grooming gangs case, there was an inherent fear of being labelled as racist by local authorities and a culture of not sharing information between depts. When it comes to public bodies, local govt, NHS etc there's the issue of confidentiality, and anybody who has worked in those fields will know it's drummed into you to protect patient/client confidentiality, but that led to organisations not sharing info.

It's been a few years since I've been out of it now, but as I understand it, safeguarding is a lot better than it used to be, although there are obviously still cases where children are not being identified as being at risk.

    It's terrible mate.

Anyway, so to what triggered my previous post...

If anyone is from the South and of a certain age, they may remember a tv news presenter who use to work for TVS, Coast to Coast and various other names it went under.

His name I'll not use, but he I believe came from a Childrens Home when growing up.

One particular episode of the programme they were interviewing about child abuse in the homes. And as I mentioned above, we got all the usual sorry, but never no action, identified by the fact it keeps happening and we keep getting forever more sorry.

Well one day in this particular episode the TV News reader lost it on air with the guy he was interviewing and got understandably very angry, reciting his own past if memory serves me correctly.

Thinking back to all those decades ago, nothing has changed, absolutely nothing, and knowing what happened down on the Romney coast since in a care home, makes it even more sickening.

So anything that rustles this hornets nest I'm all for, even if Labour and Jess Phillips are not to blame, it's time to demand answers, because everyone seems too cagey to ever bring up the subject.

How can you say safeguarding is a lot better knowing what happened to that child. It's a fooking mess mate.

From where it was, it's improved. But yeah, there's still a ton of work to do.

It does come over as the powers that be are protecting the abusers not the victims.
It also seems anyone who shouts out about it is accused of all sorts, as you say Musk is a twat but hopefully some good may come out of his seemingly good intentions to get all this **** out in the open.

Some interesting comments and thoughts above ...

I'm with brb 100% in terms of the need to stop prevarication and to put children, especially vulnerable ones, at the forefront of policies (national and governmental), but more importantly 'immediate' action and response ... and at the forefront of that is transparency... plus we must never let dangerous billionaires with huge social media control override the governmental process ...

The reason 'transparency' is so important is that it's lack plays into the hands of the conspiracists, sometimes with tragic consequences ... e.g. how many people were actually aware that Jess Phillips comments about local government enquiries into 'grooming gangs' were simply following a precedent / policy set by previous Tory governments? ...

As such the 'Internet theories' went ballistic - some people actually claiming that Labour only wanted local councils involved because these would be predominantly composed of people sharing the same religion as those in the gangs etc etc ...

The recent case of the Sharif girl demonstrates the need for root and branch changes in our social care for vulnerable children - whoever in social services signed off on the home schooling application for that kid should be sacked - indeed anybody in the chain of management that agreed it - the father's history should have had every red flag and alarm bell ringing ...

Now I didn't vote Labour (contrary to popular belief on the Politics thread on General chat) - but I do think they need to have time to bring about change - there were completely valid reasons to end 14 years of disastrous Tory government... and the damage done can't be fixed overnight ...

Who’d be a social worker? I’m sure most of them are drawn to the job because they want to help people, but they end up being the scapegoats for a failing system. Trying to hold back the tide of societal breakdown with a mop and bucket.

My best mates daughter qualified a little over a year ago, for the reasons you state, she's already disillusioned with it, there is little support from above and the case load is ridiculous, she's a forthright girl and will take no **** but others don't seem to stand up for themselves as she does, so just leave, the system is in crisis

Read the thread. This was in the uk few years ago, her son disrespected a book and the supposed correct response was to get the mother to grovel to followers of the book. For her child's safety I would guess.

I've not looked at it, but seeing the frame that is showing, the date for starters is misleading as it is dated 3rd Jan 2025, let's just say I suspected it's nothing as such but something that's been regurgiated from a while back. So I then had a brief look on twitter, and another clip within it was dated 28 Feb 2023, so that makes it nigh on 2 years old...so with knowing it was two years old, I googled part of the statement and found this by the Daily Malice:

I can't be arsed to read this rag, but anyone that has the desire or time to...

I honestly think with old age that whether you live in the UK, Russia or China, it's all the same crap just under different ideological banners, and unless you fall into suppressed minority groups your living standards aren't that much different.

Yeah pretty much. Overall tho without any doubt living standards in the West, UK included, are very high.

It's still a privileged place to be born, we are all generally lucky.

It isn’t just living standards though is it? In the west, we place a high value on personal liberty. Whereas Asian cultures place the good of the community before the rights of the individual; which is perhaps why communism works in China, but didn’t in Russia
