I had originally planned to retire at 55 - 60 and enjoy myself before I got old, my private pension pot the statement before 9/11 was £228m, the statement after was £84m and when I finally cashed it in it had crept up to £107m, luckily I had a pension from a company I worked for that gave me £150 a month and because I was on the CrossRail project for seven years after my retirement age I am fairly well off but there are probably a few million not as fortunate as I am and they are the ones that Starmer and Reeves (makes them sound like a comedy act) have stitched up
Tbf i think i am fairly consistent about this. If the poor old pensioners need to sell their home to survive (downsize) or sell and then rent before they start getting benefit handouts, then unfortunately thats the way it goes (although i understand its hard because of mobility/lifting/moving etc). I would think the same of also working class and people born into being poor even through no fault of their own. Same goes with the homeless, if they are in need of help we should to make sure they are housed and fed. If they have assets and savings, i dont know why we need to pay off their bills and mortgages with tax money. I really believe they should stop that right to buy **** and just build a load of houses even if they are like only 500 square foot big. As duggie said, if the pension doesnt cover it as theres not been enough contribution, then they should require help provided they aint sitting in their rent free million quid house
The British hate change, nothing will be fixed. It's depressing, but even the most miniscule alterations under this Gov are causing actual protests. I've also spoken to people who want the homeless to remain homeless, they don't give a **** about them - I've had these convos with people on here, they think that a homeless person is someone who "refuses" to work and such a person should rot. A callous, self absorbed, consumer society will never ever make the positive changes to improve the lives of the majority. The majority strive to become the minority, the elite, they all delude themselves into believing they are more than those around them. I recently received my permanent residency where I live now and have no intention of ever living in the UK again, but it's sad to see how people there have become. Where do you even start with pensioners? How do you even have a public discourse about it? All it takes is a crowd to say "you wanna kill their Nans!" And you will be unable to talk about it for years without losing votes. The people home HATE these types of discussions, they hate the idea that at some stage of life a sacrifice might be needed, so ignore it, blast the people who talk about it, vote for the one who pretends there is no problem.
What happened to all the pensioners at food banks under the Tories, they seem to not be cared about or mentioned all of a sudden under a Labour government - who are these pensioners in million pound houses do you know any other than TV celebs, because I don't - does anyone on here own a million pound house I don't think so. Seems we are finding any reason to beat pensioners to me why not just put up taxes, oh but he promised, well he's made lots of promises he's not kept. We're either all it together or not as I see it.
Exactly,Pensioners in million pound houses ffs! How many of those are there in the UK? 10? Most of the people over 60 I know live in sheltered housing for oldies or at best in a modest 2 bed semi. I fully believe, as things stand.....The Tories are going to be back at the next GE. It seems that this Labour governments destiny was just to be a placeholder government while the Tories got their **** together. Now the Tory villains have been booted from the front benches (Bojo, Sunak and the gang), they will be back with a vengeance. Seems to me KS doesnt have a ****ing clue what he is doing. The situation he was handed wasn't the best, granted, but the very first things you announce when getting in to power is going after benefits for the disabled and the elderly! Like WTF! I know you want to do that early on, so it is forgotten about by the next GE, but even still, there have to be better ways to fill the coffers. I am also considering leaving the UK in the next 10 years once my children have grown, which is something I never thought I would be considering. Unfortunately most of Europe is just as bad, if not worse, so it would be the states for me.
Just an exaggeration really. In reality most people in and around london will be in at least houses earth 300k+ at a minimum. The likes near luvvy will be on 150k+. You are right though, taxes have to go up first if we want to invest more into society alongside any other things people want the government to do.
The states is a closed shop now isnt it? Plus with your health issues you will probably be spending a chunk a change on medical over there.
Nah going to the US is quite easy as long as you dont have a criminal record, and have the cash to do it all and have someone on that side who can provide a reference. I work for a US company and also have extended family over there so that wouldnt be too much of an issue. The medical side of things might be though. I am okay for cash, and my illness just needs regular supply of medication so I would need to look into the costs of all that, I suppose.

I think the US is a great country, and I mean that in terms of the beauty and diversity of the landscape itself. But their healthcare system is like a corporate shark attack, their welfare and benefits system is limited and huge swathes of people fall through the net. There's poverty and homelessness in the US that resembles a third world country in parts and for the most part it is largely a dog eat dog mentality where it's survival of the richest. It seems odd that you would want to move there on the basis that the UK isn't doing these things well, but it would be a case of out of the frying pan into the nuclear reactor core swapping the UK for the US on this basis. If like you say, you've got the cash though, then you can have a good life in the US. That is, if Trump would still let you in ? I suppose he'll probs still keep the green card system, but will just whack a 20% tariff on you for being British

I am interested to know how you'd do this though, would it be through work on a Visa scheme or would you look to get a Green Card or US citizenship ? I ask, because it's a place I would move to also. Despite the problems with healthcare and benefits etc that I just mentioned. If I did it, I would probably look to either try and move my business there and employ some local people (which would mean upscaling) but I know that's one of the Green card routes or I'd just buy some land up in a remote part of Oregon, go off grid and live without the trappings of the US federal system. All of that will have to wait until my daughter has finished school though, so I wouldn't be doing anything for at least another 5-6 years.
You need to show proof of your means, ie show that you have money or the ability to earn it and you also need a clean criminal record and then something called an affidavit of support, which is a written recommendation either from a friend, family member or employer. (Who is an american or US citizen) Not sure how it would work as a business owner, but being America they would probably jump at the chance to have someone over there who is starting a business, so that would probably work in your favour. You'd probably need to give a pitch, like in Dragons Den, to the INS or whatever they call themselves now so they can determine the viability of your business. Thats just semi educated guess though
