Three things happened today, which collectively have led to me wanting Martin gone. Tonight would be fine.
Firstly, obviously, blowing a 2-0 lead to a relegation rival. Second, being tactically outclassed by an opposition manager. Thirdly, falling seven points behind 16th - which is a big gap for any struggling side.
The only consolation is that it's 16th place, not 17th place. Three points to 17th is by no means terminal, not by a long way.
I said in the summer that I thought Leicester got very, very lucky to have Maresca taken from them. His style is so similar to Martin's, that I could have easily seen their season go just as badly as ours if they had kept him. But by losing him, it gave them a free shot at bringing in a more pragmatic manager. They're only three points behind 8th, and that's not a surprise to me. I'm not saying that Cooper was a guarantee of survival (from from it), but their chances of doing so increased significantly by appointing him.
Whereas for us, because no-one took Martin, we were essentially stuck for him for the initial period of this season. Yes in theory the board could have sacked him after Wembley - and I still maintain that would have been the best decision - but it would have been incredibly harsh. Way more so than when we sacked Adkins, and that was pretty darn harsh (but also correct). If the board had sacked him, they could have only defended that decision if we'd ultimately survived in the PL. I just don't think it was ever viable that we would have sacked him before giving him a chance in the PL, and I totally understand that. Wrong decision (and not even in hindsight) but one which I apportion zero blame on the board. I get it. But I did say that once the gap starts to open up, it would be time. And that gap, at least to 16th anyway, is now there. So it is time.
