This article has him as an officer.
I'm not starting an argument but it is interesting that his actual rank is a bit of a mystery. I also read an article published by Yale University which had him as a warrant officer and several Wiki entries as a lieutenant.

I agree. It depends on what you want to believe, especially with this bloke. How could anyone take him seriously when he claimed to be the last King of Scotland?
