The Treasury is reconsidering parts of Labour’s manifesto plan for non-domicile tax status over worries that the reforms will bring in less money than expected.

There is concern that planned changes, which aimed to raise extra money to spend on public services like the NHS, could prompt wealthy foreigners to simply leave the UK.

"Non-dom" describes a UK resident whose permanent home - or domicile - for tax purposes is outside the UK.

Sounds like labour have utterly embarrassed themselves from the moment they got in.

Like they see it as boarding the gravy train rather than being voted into public service.

The resignation letter is savage. Mind you she and ths top team havent seen eye to eye for a while. There are reportedly many in the party who want the winter fuel allowance and two child cap turned round. Wonder if more have the courage of their convictions.

More gifts emerged were re-categorised as clothes by Starmer this week. This isnt new for politicians, been going on for years. But for Labour to claim they would clean up politics and remove sleaze, then simply milk these gifts for all they can is mind bogglingly stupid. It isnt like the public cant have a look online to see what they get. They are just utterly stupid, and sleazy. Not only are they authoring poor policy, they are being hypocritical with it. So far they look like they are following in Tory footsteps rather well.

Meanwhile Ed Davey rides a jet ski to his conference.

Our politicians are an embarassment frankly.

That’s exactly the word I always seem to use to describe these politicians, can’t they see the public will find out eventually and expose them for their greed, sleaze and incompetence

This whole ‘gifts’ system seems flawed to me.
Understand it’s been going on for years and if you write them up in the book kept at Westminster then that’s ok. However it’s surprising how many fail to do this, Starmer included.
Well for me it’s wrong on all fronts, these politicians are decently paid, most have irons in other fires and frankly some are to me mega rich and accepting these freebies dosent sit well.
Also what does the donor get as a back hander for this, doubt we’ll ever find out.
There’s no such thing as a free lunch and it’s time this was completely outlawed from Parliament.

Maybe I've missed something but the whole "it was a busy election campaign and I didn't have time to buy clothes" argument is weak as piss. Did he not have 447 dark suits before the election campaign? Does he wear a new suit every day? Can't get my head around how that's a decent explanation for some bloke giving him tens of thousands.

And Bridget Phillipson got thousands to fund her 40th birthday party but it was OK because it was a work event. What?!?!

No mate, the labour party put him up for election in his old man's old suit without spending a penny on his image. Not a penny.

Isn’t this the underhand sleazy behaviour Starmer,Rayner and co have been shouting and protesting about for the last 14 years, but are now indulging in it <doh>

The hypocritical arrogant bastards just won’t see how loathed they are. Not while they are still able to stuff their own pockets.
Like I said when the Tories were in. I loath all the bastards.

If we all agree that the main parties are as bad as each other, the lib dems probably as well if given the chance, what are the solutions? Politics in general seems doomed to fail given that human weaknesses are easily exploited by outside influencers.

Not sure why we should have any donations to parties. Set a fair amount for campaigning then the rich can’t own our politics. Gift events are complicated of course, gift clothing isn’t. Give it to those who need clothing or can’t afford good clothing, it’s too murky. I think it’s still early days to judge them on their core business, we’ll know more end of October. The winter fuel decision had good bits (means testing) and bad bits (bar too low) for me, but definitely badly timed and presented and they’re falling into the murky bits of British politics not cleaning it up so far, but even that’s early days, though some indefensible choices.

That Phillipson story was awful imo. It shows how quickly they have become what they claimed to despise.

Some of the defences they have trotted out have been laughable. My son needed a quiet place to study! Really. The fact he thinks that is defensible shows how out of touch with us all. Sunak got grief for heating his swimming pool. At least it was his to heat. Starmer is living in someone elses posh place rent free and heating free. It is pure hypocrisy and he seemingly cant see it.

Isn't it funny that Labour, a party that supposedly represents "the ordinary working family" and has socialist roots where riches are to be shared equally, it's MPs have rejected that and it's all about how much they can pocket for themselves

This Tory party conference is woeful. I see absolutely no light at the end of any tunnel.

I would look at buggering off from the country. But it is my time to look after my folks and in laws. For sure the politicians wont.
