Yes, Boris was embarrassing. But even he would wince at the sight of you embarrassing yourself on here.

More eye. I had a giggle at this FB comment.
"Jenrick sounds like something you poured down toilets and drains in the 1960s" Or something Trump would recommend as a covid cure. (mine)

Funnily enough my Dad (a staunch Tory) pulled ‘Starmer is worse than Truss’ on me yesterday. Could only laugh at it tbh, he’s already managed to be PM for longer.

Like it or not he is here for 4-4.5 years (possibly more, but who the hell knows at this stage) we will know just how good or **** he is by then.

I'd like to see a return to fixed term parliaments whereby general elections were automatically scheduled for the first Thursday in May of the fifth year after the previous general election, or the fourth year if the date of the previous election was before the first Thursday in May.

Re your Dad's comment. It's probably going to fall on deaf ears but the football tickets, glasses and new frocks are not corruption. They follow a set of rules which I would agree need to be repealed. However Jenrick overruling a local council planning application at the 11th hour in favour of his mate from down the club in order to save him £46m in infrastructure costs is definitely corruption is it not?

Edit: Jenrick's decision was overturned it obviously stank to much.
"Tower Hamlets LBC had originally refused permission for the site of the former Westferry Printworks on the Isle of Dogs, and following an appeal, the planning inspector then advised the then communities secretary Robert Jenrick not to grant permission.
Despite this, Mr Jenrick granted permission in January 2020. It later emerged that the communities secretary had sat next to Mr Desmond at a fundraising dinner a few months previously, and that Mr Desmond made a £12,000 donation to the Conservatives weeks after the approval.
Tower Hamlets challenged the decision, but this was quashed by the High Court in May last year. However, the government has since reviewed the matter again, and housing minister Eddie Hughes yesterday overturned the previous decision on behalf of the communities secretary.
The document outlining the decision said: “The secretary of state considers that overall, the [Westferry] scheme does not reflect local design policies or government guidance on design,” and was not in accordance with part of the National Planning Policy Framework."

Yeah, the Truss piece is pretty narrow sighted, however I could see a situation where Starmer is forced out internally and a more left leaning member taking over. No idea who that would be, but wouldnt be surprised if Starmer didnt make the first term.

I hope that doesnt happen, as I think the country needs stability (unless they are like Boris).

Did Starmer say anything about rejoining the Single Market and Customs Union? It would help enormously if he actively went down this route as it would help both importers and exporters of goods, services, access to skilled personnel enormously, And we would not have to pay tariffs on goods imported from the EU and vice versa. For me, this should be priority number one. Second, would be to tax heavily the dividends paid to the shareholders of the water companies. And renationalise them.

If they renationalise them, wouldn't that erode the need to tax the shareholders?

Much as I would like it I believe he's ruled it out whilst talking about closer ties to the EU. Anything that eases the paperwork and financial nightmare that the oven ready deal brought about is welcome by me.

Not unexpected, a lot of conference votes don't become policy, PR last time round just one.

This guy is turning into a ****ing joke. I wonder if he is going to do the same for all school children, as was his promise when introducing VAT on children’s education.

No different to Boris and the rest of the chancers we have in Government over the years.

PM accepted £20,000 accommodation to help his teenage son study for GCSEs

Sir Keir Starmer accepted accommodation worth £20,000 to help his 16-year-old son study for his GCSE exams, it has emerged.

The prime minister was asked about a donation of £20,437 made by Labour peer Lord Alli from May to July of this year.

Asked about this by the BBC, Sir Keir says: "At the beginning of the election, which we didn't know when it was going to be called, my boy was in the middle of his GCSEs.

"I made him a promise that he'll be able to get to his school, do his exams without being disturbed."

But, Sir Keir says, "we had lots of journalists outside our house where we lived".

"I'm not complaining about that, that's fine, but if you're a 16-year-old trying to do your GCSEs, your one chance in life, I promised him we'd move somewhere, we'd get out of that house, and go somewhere where he could be peacefully studying.

"Someone then offered me accommodation where we could do that, I took it up, and it was the right thing to do for my boy, it didn’t cost the taxpayer a penny."

Asked if that was Lord Alli, Sir Keir says: "Yes, of course.

"But my primary concern wasn't about influencing government, it was making sure my boy could do his GCSEs without wading through loads of journalists outside the house."

What does he mean by closer ties? As far as I can see, rejoin the SM and CU is the only option and he needs to make it quick. Here in Mallorca there are lots and lots of yachts and small boats of all shapes and sizes. Before Brexit, the guys would order spare parts from the UK. Thanks to the "oven-ready" deal, trade with UK companies in this particular business has shrunk. And if this is replicated across many other manufacturers and services trading with the EU. no wonder the UK economy has shrunk. As far as I can see, Starmer is pussy-footing around instead of dealing with a very urgent issue.

Except that was a pack of lies too.

"The dates of their luxury £20,437.28 stay? From 29th May 2024 to 13th July 2024. The first GCSE exam was on 9th May 2024, and the final one wrapped up on 19th June 2024. So, not only did Starmer’s son start exams weeks before they checked in, but his last paper was nearly a month before they checked out. How much “revision” time do you need in a five-star pad post-GCSEs?"

It's not always the most serious offence that causes a leader's downfall. After all Johnson's incompetence and corruption it was the relatively minor partygate that led to his demise. Although confusing hostages with sausages is an easy mistake to make, (we've all done it) it could be sausagegate that causes Starmer's removal for being a national embarrassment.

Oh dear. What's happened to that sense of humour seen almost every day on here for the last 14 years? Funny how people get a bit niggly when the boots on the other foot.

I totally agree with rejoining the SM and CU but it is Starmer who, currently at least, rules it out. Quite how the 'reset' will look like and what will change is to be seen. Rejoining would mean adopting freedom of movement and aligning with EU trade regulations and agreements. negating already negotiated treaties, I.E with Japan. Hardly surprising those deals have been to the detriment of the UK, ask the farmers and fishermen.

    From https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg3pxz4334o

"Taking questions from journalists after the news conference, Sir Keir was pressed over what concessions the UK would have to offer to secure an improved deal.

The PM said he was "absolutely clear" the government wanted to reset relations with Europe.

He added: "That does not mean reversing Brexit or re-entering the single market or the customs union.

"But it does mean a closer relationship on a number of fronts, including the economy, including defence, including exchanges."

According to the article UK's existing Brexit trade deal, is due to be reviewed in 2026.

Following brexit the UK has gone from being a rule maker to a rule taker.
