I started watching it, but had to turn it off. Some of these people, including Trump himself if you ask me, are genuinely bonkers.
I think a lot of it is an act. He knows who his base is and plays up to it. Sometimes he goes too far and I don’t doubt he’s a narcissist in the extreme with decades of privilege behind him but I refuse to believe some of the stuff he comes out with is really him being himself. Just the American version of Johnson.

He is one of several figures from neighbouring countries to criticise the move. Restrictions already in place at some of Germany's land borders will apply from next Monday with France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Denmark. The head of a Dutch-German alliance of border communities said it was a "panic reaction", while Austria's interior minister stressed it would not be take in anyone turned away by Germany. However, Germany's opposition conservatives said Berlin had not gone far enough. The three-parties in Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government have come under increasing pressure to respond to poor results in state elections in eastern Germany where immigration was the biggest issue. In Thuringia, the far-right Alternative for Germany came first, and another election is on the horizon in less than two weeks in Brandenburg. The migration debate has been ignited by the killing of three people at a festival in Solingen in western Germany where a Syrian failed asylum seeker who should have been deported was arrested. The conservative CDU/CSU parties said initially they would take part in a migration summit of the government and state leaders on Tuesday, aimed at reaching an agreement on the next steps. But they pulled out, accusing the government of not taking seriously conservative proposals to reject asylum seekers at the border. "Clearly the federal government is hopelessly divided internally and cannot agree on effective measures," said CDU leader Friedrich Merz. Germany and all its neighbours are part of the Schengen border-free zone and under European Union rules temporary controls are allowed "as a last resort measure, in exceptional situations" for up to six months. Under her plan put to the 16 German states, police would check whether an asylum seeker had already sought protection in another EU country and swiftly start proceedings to send them back if they had. please log in to view this image EPA-EFE We want people whose asylum procedure is the responsibility of another EU country to be sent back there Nancy Faeser German interior minister However, Poland's prime minister was in no doubt that the measures were triggered by "the internal German political situation... and not our policy towards illegal migration at our borders". Poland has faced a surge in illegal migrant crossings over its border with Belarus since 2021 which it considers part of a "hybrid war" waged by both Belarus and Russia. Many of the migrants head for Germany. Donald Tusk told a meeting of Polish diplomats in Warsaw he would ask for urgent consultations with all the countries affected. European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said any reintroduction of border checks had to be done in line with the Schengen code, so while Germany's measures were possible, "these controls must be necessary and proportionate". In Austria, where the far right is leading the opinion polls ahead of 29 September elections, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said that he had instructed the head of police not to take anyone back who had been rejected by Germany. "There is no leeway," he told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The mayor of a Dutch border town, Joris Bengevoord, said the border region with Germany had already experienced delays during the Euro 2024 football championship over the summer, when Germany imposed temporary border checks. "At some border crossings, waiting times were up to half an hour," said Bengevoord, who is chairman of the Euregio alliance of German and Dutch border towns. Dutch transport group TLN accused Germany of undermining the Schengen agreement. Some political leaders on the right in the Netherlands have taken a different view. "If Germany can do it, why can't we?" asked Geert Wilders, whose anti-immigration, far-right Freedom Party came first in last year's Dutch elections and is now part of the government. "As far as I'm concerned, the sooner the better." Dilan Yesilgöz of the centre-right liberal VVD was also keen on the "super-interesting" German plan. It sent a message that the government wanted control, she said, even if political symbolism by itself was of little help.
I didn't watch the debate, but from what I've read he was every bit as bonkers as I suggested, claiming that immigrants are eating peoples pets and that Democrats want to allow abortions after birth. Sounds like Harris wiped the floor with him.
I didn’t watch it live, but have seen some clips. Seems she sank to his own puerile level and was better at it than him. Neither offered any policy detail at all. Mind you that worked for Starmer…..although apparently Harris was smiley and positive (without details) about the future, so wasn’t following the Mr Misery playbook too closely. Obviously I hope she wins and wins big, not because I think she’ll be any good but because he is obviously very bad, and a narrow victory will raise the chances of contested results and genuine unrest.
A lot of ridiculous hullabaloo over the winter fuel allowance. It’s three avocados per week. Work harder etc.
Donald Trump says he will not debate Kamala Harris again, days after the pair's first showdown in Philadelphia on Tuesday
But why? You won so convincingly. Being a pussy is not the way to show you are the greatest and smartest person ever to live. Perhaps there is some benefit to drinking all that bleach after all. Only you would know. We love you Donald. How we laughed. At your threats. Not you personally. Your age, wisdom and sheer brilliance is there for all to see and you just get better with each passing year
Presumably it's too late for the Republicans to ditch their candidate now after he imploded during a televised debate.
Starmer seems to be on the verge of allowing Ukraine to fire UK-made missiles into Russia, saying Ukraine has a right to defend itself. But this isn't defence, it's counter-attack, and a very dangerous step in my opinion.
They need to hit the airfields where bombers take off from. russia drops thousands of massive glide bombs every week on cities and front lines, it's definitely self defence. They're not going to be used to attack cities, just airfields and ammo dumps.
Starmer appears to be going macho on every issue that he turns his attention to, presumably to demonstrate his ‘toughness’. Not sure that this will win him the votes to guarantee a second term, which is when everything will be brilliant, apparently. This one seems a bit nuts to me, and I think Biden does too, I’d be surprised if he lets US missiles be used in this way. And surely it should be a NATO decision, after all its NATO members in Eastern Europe who are at most risk from escalation.
It's looking like it is going to happen. Putin has already said that if it does, Russia would effectively be at war with NATO. He's saying things like that all the time of course, but it would certainly be a dangerous escalation. I even heard a suggestion that the UK-made missiles would have to be operated by British personnel because the Ukrainians aren't sufficiently trained in using them. That would be mad.
They've had Storm Shadows for over a year, they know how to fire them. Iran and North Korea sending ****loads of weapons/ammo/missiles to russia doesn't mean we're at war with them?
It's Ukraine firing the weapons, not us. I don't see why it would mean we're at war with them? putin has new red lines every other week, it's become ridiculous now. He only understands force, diplomacy or appeasement will only encourage him.
