Reminds me of when Baz asked the Aussie bloke on the podcast if Walter was good at breaking down teams because Rosenior struggled with it, and he was clearly expecting an affirmative answer and the Aussie was just like "Yeah nah he struggles with it too!"
Poor dull game. Four games in and I am still waiting for this attacking football we were promised. Not impressed at all.
I thought that was abject and worse than the worst under Rosenior. At least with Rosenior we had thrilling away games to look forward to with some great performances. Now we seem to be a heartbeat away from conceding a goal all the time, with not much evidence we're going to score very many at the other end. Omur, Mehlem and Millar were all pants today. By contrast Jarvis was a breath of fresh air and he was playing on his weaker side because of Millar getting his favoured side but making nothing of it. The only players who seem to have listened to Walter are Coyle and McLoughlin who have tried to transform their games, and actually move out of position and join attacks. Bedia looks promising, and Slater was far better once he'd been moved from the wing where he's ineffective. The other plus point is Pandur looks very dependable all of a sudden. But so far it's more boring than the most boring stuff under Rosie, and I think Acun's hasty decision to pull the trigger may well come back to bite him. I guess early days still, but harder games coming up where we may concede hatfuls and still not score enough.
I think we should sign Meffert even more now. Zambrano had some good touches and passes but having a player in a crucial area of the pitch who is more familiar with Walter’s style of football than any other player in the world would be a massive plus. The rotating back-four isn’t working right now for me. It’s a more complex way of playing out from the back than Rosenior’s variety so teething problems are to be expected but the current personnel just don’t look comfortable doing it. Think we need to drop one of Jones or McLoughlin for Hughes against Leeds. We also seem to play everything out wide. Maybe it was because Millwall played very compact but Zambrano and Mehlem saw very little of the ball in the first half. Slater was better today but not great. Oh, and the short corners are ****. We’ve done it all pre-season and in every competitive game and it hasn’t resulted in anything close to a chance. At least mix it up.
that wasn't great but it's too early to hammer Walter or his style of football, at home to Millwall back in Feb we only won 1-0 with a front 4 that have been sold for a combined 60m quid this summer, and stats wise we had more possession and shots today...let's give him and the mass of signings some time
Positives: We didn’t lose. Pandur looks a different keeper to the friendlies. Bedia looked good. Drameh at LB and Coyle at RB works fine. Negatives: Weak as in midfield. Got bullied. By far Millar’s worst performance. Wasn’t helped by having Giles behind him. Giles. I think I’ll wait until he’s gone before I unleash my honest thoughts. Mcloughlin is also too negative and slow. He can defend well though, so almost makes up for it. I said it about Longman, but when Jarvis comes on (and fair play to the lad, he did well) and looks by far your most threatening midfielder, it’s time to worry. If we have ambitions of making progress from last season, this isn’t ideal. Omur needs to be central. Playing him out wide is not doing anything for him or us. I’m dreading the Leeds game if we start the game like we have in each of these league games and continue to dither about at the back. The only reason we haven’t been losing is because the opposition have been naff up front each time. Anyway, let’s see what Tim Walter thinks of that one. I would love to hear Acun’s thoughts but I suspect I know already.
3 games in and unbeaten, could be a lot worse. TW won't know what his best team is for a while yet, especially if more players come in next week so I can see a few more scratchy games like this one today coming up over the next few weeks. Patience and strong stomachs called for I think! UTT!
Agreed. Further progress. It's looking better. There are going to be days like today. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Love the sentiment - I'm afraid there's very little patience among football supporters though. ''I want it all and i want it now'' (as the song goes).
Exactly. He is still having to use Jarvis, Slater and Coyle. Until the squad is complete and the players are settled we are going to see this hybrid with flashes of great play and passages of frustration.
I wish I shared your confidence. I think there's every chance we could be relegated, though I hope not. I've seen nothing so far to suggest we'll remotely challenge at the top end of the table.
I actually thought we broke the low block down quite well today. A lot of **** crossing though after we broke it though
Not loads HHH, but there are definitely a selective few.,...shameful really considering the changes we're implementing... some cant see the wood for the Rosenior , I mean trees...
