The only positives are money and an easy 4 year contract for doing not that much. It's not just the England job, there's easily 20+ club managing posts that are more prestigious than managing any country hence why the likes of Roberto Martinez goes from managing a talented Belgium team to under-achievement to doing likewise with Portugal.

There's no middle ground or reasonable expectations with it. If a manager wins a competition with England they'll be the best ever, given the freedom of London and have a statue built. Southgate made two finals and both were narrow loses and he seems to be regarded as a failure.

Any actually good manager would be insane to take it. Hence I'm fairly confident Eddie Howe will stay at Newcastle (unless the FA offer him a crazy deal - and if I was them I would) as I think it's a better job.

same here though it does highlight the low standard and scarcity of English managers / coaches

The fact that an English manager hasn't won our top flight in over 30 years says a lot too.

    Surely Leeds 1992, Howard Wilkinson

ps. Oh sorry you mean a team that could realisically have won the title! Well Keegan surely counts, has there been a top three manager since?

I'm struggling to think of any. We had a good couple of seasons with Bobby Robson but were never going to win the league really. After that I can only think of Howe, Melty-face and Roy Evans to have got Champions League even. Surely I'm missing some. Maybe Roy Hodgeson at Liverpool (obviously didn't work out that way but it was a good job at least).

Which is the part of the point I suppose. Hardly any highly rated managers who big clubs would give a chance.

    Yeah massive obviously.

If you ignore that even Saints have won something more recently despite it being the only major trophy in our history.

Up for debate but when I said I thought there was 20+ clubs who are a bigger job than managing a country I was including at least 10 Prem clubs, ourselves included. I think this is shown in lots of different ways, Arne Slot got the Liverpool job from doing well with Feyenoord - would he have got it if he'd got Hungary to a Euros SF instead? I don't think so. Even Burnley have shown to be a better shop window than England is likely to be (Kompany went to Bayern, where is Southgate likely to go?).

International management is a completely different kettle of fish to club. Can't really compare the two imo.

I dunno, I think the England job is still seen as the pinnacle for any English manager and I don't see any Englishman turning it down if offered it, whether they're employed or not. Especially at this current moment where the squad is stacked with great players.

Between Howe and Potter, it feels like we've got two managers who could be well suited to this group of players too, so obviously the FA will hire Lampard knowing them.

I’m still convinced Carsley is getting the job. He’s come through the pathway and knows the international set-up.

I hope Howe gets it. Don’t think it will suit him but I’d far rather we leave on good terms than he gets binned by Christmas if we’re doing ****. He was off his tits doing that interview last week breaking ranks. Saudis will bomb him out like he’s from Yemen at first opportunity
