Legal migration also needs to be severely curtailed and the rules quickly amended to stop the likes of students (who are paying for their own education in this country) bringing loads of dependents over with them
It’s one of the most stupid things ever
I’ll be honest I don’t know the numbers involved, but in view of 700,000 total I’d imagine it’s a drop in the ocean. Don’t these students pay over the odds and subsidise our students, or am I dreaming.

I will explain in simple terms for you.

'Until the underlying issues are fixed you can’t just stop immigration. For instance many of the immigrants are needed at present to work in the NHS and Social care sector.'

Ashton- I haven't said stop legal migration - with the current birth rate we'll need them to look after us old codgers.
But you can't tell anyone we need 745,000 turning up each year, let alone these chancers coming across the Channel.
Uncontrolled immigration will get worse under Labour, time will prove it.

Why do people come to the UK? To study - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

In 2022, the numbers of study related visas granted to dependants of students was 135,788. It should be noted this 135,000 does not appear wholly in the net migration figure. Students and dependants are frequently not included in net migration figures.

Well it’s certainly got worse under the previous government that’s for sure. It’s a world wide issue. It’s not going to be an easy fix whoever the government is, but we have to reduce the time it takes to assess people, then we have a legitimate case to return anyone that fails, and allow anyone that passes to work and start paying their way, as it is we’re paying £millions per day to house and feed ALL of them. It would also discourage those that would fail from applying as they’d know they’d be returned quickly.

I couldn't care less Tory or Labour, net migration can't carry on like this.
It needs fixing not burying your head.

absolutely there is something like 4,000,000+ people here that are from "migration backgrounds" ... the population explosion since last census is caused primarily by people / decendants that were not on the last census or the one before that.

there was / is a site that gave the breakdown of who and from where people came from [ like I am from a Scots father English mother ] their family to date accounts for 41 people having been born [ of course their partners share the offspring as well ] that is over a period of over 80 years .

a extended family from an Asian country that came here in 80's... 1986? with 4 children 12 years plus was documented around covid time with a family group of 51. [ both parents [1986] had died of covid ]

note I have a sister in law daughter of wifes dad [still living 92+]her extended family is already at 38! his gt grandchildren total 14 so far and has 2 gt gt grandchildren.. weirdest thing though of all offspring only 5 are male

You are fixated with the last lot. Get over it. They were dire.

Immigration is an issue for government, whoever it is.

but we have to reduce the time it takes to assess people, then we have a legitimate case to return anyone that fails,

Reducing the time in Cooper's book is to give a free pass.
Returning anyone back is for the Fairies......each case will have a human rights lawyer champing at the bit. They know a woke bunch of judges will get all the backing from Keir Starmer and Westminster, just as the current 90,000 in the backlog.

It would also discourage those that would fail from applying as they’d know they’d be returned quickly

Wouldn't it be nice ?
You are so naive.

Not naive at all, if they are dealt with quickly and sent back if they fail, then there’s less incentive, that’s just common sense. Naive is thinking Rwanda would work.

Agree, but for different reasons to you.

if they are dealt with quickly and sent back if they fail,

IF they're dealt with quickly is a big IF and certainly doesn't mean they'll be sent back.
Maybe in your world Ashton but in the real world the Human Rights lawyers will have a bonanza.......Macron and co might won't help either.

We aren’t the only ones with the problem, as it stands we don’t have a leg to stand on as they haven’t even been processed. I’m not saying it’ll be easy, also the ones that pass we no longer have to home them and they’ll be able to work etc

What do you suggest then?

Nothing will be easy because of left leaning woke leaders pandering to Human Rights lawyers.
Something left field throughout the world will be needed, interesting that Australia have managed to curb the immigration problem while the woke screamed against their solution.

Or we could employ Trump.

The left would scream the house down if Trump was employed <laugh>

thought I read somewhere that a lot of them owe a lot of money still!

you need to understand the "rules that govern the "illegal" immigration. I dont think some have a clue what the rules are .. and others dont care as the system from the borders of europe in are broken! ...fantastic sunset by the way 2120pm just north of west!
