I would point out the housing market is absolutely ****ed mind. The house I live in is worth 175% what it was worth in 2020. Should have ****ing bought a house in 2020... shouldn't I.
My wife is insistent that we're going to Australia in a couple of years time for a visit but I'd imagine jobs in my field are fairly limited. Gordon Childe had to leave Australia to find anything to do.
It’s an interesting one, as the lifestyle out there really appeals. However cost of living and housing puts me off. Both mine and my lasses jobs are in the top 10 most needed, but for mine the salary is only about £5k more a year than I’m on here, but house prices are far more there so think I’d end up worse off.
I get it. It has to be right for you. We moved over here back end of 2007 just as the GFC hit. Painful initially but worked out well in the end.
My uncle moved out there to Perth about 20 years ago now and has never looked back. We’ve only seen him at most 5/6 times in that period. Was an aircon engineer but ended up doing it both offshore and currently in the mines earning a fortune. They’re crying out for people in my industry (telecoms) and he’s been telling me to go for years but I’m not sure it’s all as rosy as it looks. Good wages but the cost of living is exponentially more so being paid $100k a year means nout. The salary for what I do looks to be about $130-160k but no idea how far that goes. Going to book flights to head out and see him in 2026 like so I’ll see what it’s about. F*cking hate spiders though so I imagine that won’t be fun.
We have had 4 x 6 week holidays in Western Australia since retiring in 2014. I wish we had visited when I was younger, I would have been out there like a shot. It’s my ideal place, everything geared to outdoor pursuits. We were fortunate to be gifted a 4x4 SUV for the duration, each time we were there so we managed to see quite a lot of the area. I didn’t really find shopping and eating out that much more expensive than the UK but alcohol was ridiculously expensive. I can’t comment on the rest of Australia but the bits of Western Australia we visited are stunning.
Will do EJK . Each time we visited we had a day out with a couple of my ex colleagues who are working for Group 4, at the courthouse in Perth, she is Front of House and he is Cells. We haven't visited since Covid but my missus is talking about next year for her sisters special birthday. I'm not sure my knees are up to the flight, too much sport is catching up on me in my dotage, I might need a bit of lubricant on the flight

We were looking at emigrating over there years ago. I have relatives in NSW and have visited previously but the missus had never been so we went over for a month to see if she liked it. Turned out she loved it but her mam took bad whilst we were there and it hit home for her just how far away we were and in the end we didn't do it. We are planning to head back over for the last test match vs England and hopefully take in a T20 game as well in 2026.
Brother and family moved to perth about 20 years ago, been a couple of times,was there in April for 6 weeks. Totally different to uk. House prices are stupidly expensive though, got converted to aussi rules fan by nephew's, love the sport now.
I have been in Perth almost 6 months now and there have been some difficult times. Housing is expensive and some of your weekly shopping can be as well, but fuel is almost half the price of the UK which can be a big saving and the lifestyle is certainly different. Work life balance is so much better especially in the summer as I can finish work and head off to the beach for a nice walk.
