Going back to England, Mainoo was also a success, especially given he was fourth choice for CM and forced Southgate to play him, and stayed in.
He didn't do well in the final but then his senior partner in midfield abandoned him and pissed around doing nothing in front of the centre halves.
Something else that has gone under the radar. Mainoo copped it for that, when it was Rice who was culpable.
Mainoo was brilliant, big step up for him this year and he hasn’t disappointed. Will be an england regular for years to come.
I thought he was terrific for such a young player in a first International Tournament... most noticeable thing for me is his composure and technique when receiving the ball in tight spaces ... and that he goes seeking it there in the first place ... reminded me of Gazza in that aspect of his game ...
