Ok, I’ve heard said, from someone with a house on the eastern end of Crete, that the Chania end, the west, is the ‘posher’ end, the east is the ‘party’ end. I went to the Chania end before I’d heard this advice. Thought it was great, I’d go again. That said if I’d known the east end was partyland I wouldn’t have gone there anyway. Does that help? Probably not…
Well 6 days untill I go to campbeltown (mull of kintyre) can feel the blood pressure dropping already
Anyone on here been to San Francisco recently?....ie say past 3 years...Reading some stuff about the 'Tenderloin' area and how iffy it is, but obviously don't know if this is OTT or accurate...Anyone with insider knowledge who's been to the city would be appreciated.
Came back from Crete a couple of weeks ago. Stayed on the north coast about a 30 min journey west of Heraklion, not the busiest part of the island but plenty of water sports, bars etc. A N is deffo the busier and party part of the island.

I went just over 3 years ago and walked anround that area during the day, I didnt have any issues apart from a few druggies, however this was during Covid and I didn’t stay overnight in that area!
I went pre-covid. There were many homeless people in the Tenderloin area. Early morning there were large groups as this is when they had left the sleeping facilities. We were looking for the street cars & some kind gent recognised we were tourists & showed us the way. He explained the large homeless population was because other states / cities bussed them in (paid for a ticket) as SF had a policy to offer beds to all homeless people. His other advice was to avoid eye contact & you wouldn’t be approached. It worked. We didn’t feel threatened in any way. It was my favourite city of all we visited on that trip.
I was there in 2022 and the Tenderloin area was horrific, shanty tent towns down alleyways, lots of homelessness, and people shooting up hard drugs in the open outside our hostel on the sidewalk. We didn’t encounter any problems personally but you do get the odd person trying to engage with you but we just politely ignored and moved on. Overall it wasn’t nice to see but we didn’t feel too unsafe. (We were a group of lads in our 20’s so might be different if you’re a family or couple) We went down the West Coast using the Amtrak trains, San Francisco was our least favourite place but still glad we ticked it off.
Thanks...I've heard enough to think I might ditch the idea...I was last there in the late1980s. From memory the area seemed okay then, but has obviously gone down the pan since...Last time I was there there were some Vietnam vets wandering around like lost souls, but now it appears that the area is ravaged by victims of fentanyl.
