I think I’ve mentioned before but my younger brother (ex Ferriby U18) was best mates with Dan James’ older brother Alex (good cricketer). Our two families were pretty close and my Mum used to pick the James lads up from school on the days their Mum couldn’t. I once knocked a 7 year old Dan down our stairs when we were playing WWF (the wrestling not the wildlife charity). His dad was a legend too, always took the time to ask me how uni was going and how my brother was, got me a pint in (insisted). He was really dedicated to the youth teams at South Cave.

Former city coach Rod Arnold used to do the quizzes at the pubs in South Cave, great guy and a good mate of my parents (which also included Gareth Tudor-Price and George Paver - when my parents were throwing a party, it was always going to get messy…). His grandson Charlie is part of the same friendship group as my brother and Alex James.

My year group at Hunsley didn’t spawn that many footballers. Think Matty Friend was the only one who went on to be a pro with Harrogate. Nick Barmby’s nephew Kieran had trials at Leeds, but I don’t think he got in. Natalie Dixey played for England Women U18s but that was before they were professional. Think Holly Williamson did as well. Not sure. Was weird because our year group did well at tournaments, but most of the lads that were good were wrong uns haha. I wish I’d paid more attention to the social aspects of school, by the time I reached the end of Year 10 I was drinking in White Room and going to Spiders <laugh>. Oh Matty Bloor’s (ex Ferriby, Goole and Farsley) sister was in my year, was a long distance runner back then, he was always a decent guy Matty.

I know former City youth player Ellis Barkworth is now a hairdresser and cuts my mate’s hair once a month, a pretty good job he does too.

You'll probably know my wife. She was also friends with Alex James at school, and her brother is the Matty Friend you mentioned, although he didn't make it pro or play for Harrogate, but he did play at a decent semi-pro level for a good while.

Maybe, Alex was the year below me. Was your wife from South Cave?

I didn’t really know Matty, only that he went on to play at a higher level than I did, they told me he went to Harrogate who at the time were in the same league as Ferriby. Either way, nobody else I knew at school really did anything.

I’m not sure what Rod is doing truth be told, I haven’t lived in South Cave for over a decade, I’ve been back a few times and he hasn’t been in. I assume he still lives round there.

So all that about Chiedu Oraka’s set at Glastonbury having something to do with the new kit was a red herring.
