I don’t think the defence has been particularly good. It’s more to do with the lack of quality in the opposition we’ve faced.
In 1966 when England qualified from their group they only got five points. Points were done differently then
Bod when did we last have a decent England side that entralled the fans, because I honestly can't remember?
Agree but it’s the part of the team I trust most with a pretty low bar. Against a decent side I’d trust the defence more to step up and grind out a 1-0 than the attack to finally click and get a couple of goals.
You were slagging off the 1950 team that lost to America. Even 66 wasn’t particularly enthralling from what I’ve read and 96 was a poor first game and then brilliant against Holland after getting lucky against Scotland. The group stages weren’t good in 1990 even.
It's quite simple, do not lose, don't go out to a sucker punch, play defensively because one loss and you're done. Protect, protect protect. There's no league or another cup for you to change focus to, that's it for 2 years. Been pretty obvious for years that's how nearly every successful nation approaches it.
Probably France 98, Owen enthralled everyone. and before that Euro 96 probably with Gazza. But yeah other than that, pretty droll I guess
'96 we played fairly well. Fortunately we didn't have to qualify and only got to the S/F because of poor officiating gave Spain's goal offside, but that's the only time I remember England playing more entertaining football at a finals.
Looks like people are happy with mediocrity because that’s the way it has always been. Which has won us absolutely **** all.
I support Gillingham mate, we sack managers for only winning 1-0, so Southgate would have been long gone.
We got beaten by Romania in the group, then knocked out in R16, and Owen only played 200mins of football.
I’ll never see my team win anything England is my one bit of hope to see a team I support lifting a trophy. I can’t accept the way it is because I know we could be so much better with the squad of players that we have.
They didn't 'enthrall' at all, that's just your memory glossing it over and remembering a few snatches of the match v Columbia.
I was asked when we enthralled not when we won! If its just based on when we won then only 1966 counts! and that was 17 years before I was born
... just as they would with Trippier playing out of position... but the real difference is pace and potential recovery ... Saka has it ... Trippier doesn't ... No serious Manager would go to a tournament without a fit left back, play a right back in central midfield in preference to specialists in that position and play one of the best young central midfielders in Europe wide left ... so now that we've concluded on the 'serious manager' point ...
