Agree with this. it’s as I’ve said for a long time. I’m fully behind the idea of the model. I really like it. I really like the structure of the club. But the execution of it has been pretty poor in a lot of areas. Our squad building has also been about opportunistic transfer value growth rather than trying to attempt to build a winning team with succession planning and based around a consistent playing identity. Basically all the stuff Speakman said we’d do when he started, around player models etc, just hasn’t happened. We are acting like a club that wants to look like it has a plan. But it doesn’t know how, or isn’t able, to carry out that plan.
That said, and I might regret saying this, there is absolutely no chance we go into pre season without the head coach in place. I know nothing surprises us with this club, but I just can’t see that happening. I can definitely see it dragging another couple of weeks. But not until July. Ideally needs to be this week otherwise I get properly shifty
I'd be interested to hear what Speakman would say about what our playing philosophy is. Presumably it's what we played under Mowbray even if it fizzled out. The youth sides seem to have an identity and play good football, it might be that the club as a whole does have one but when it comes to the first team the higher stakes and poor coaching has combined to bugger it up temporarily.
It’s already poor. Beyond this week and you start to question wtf they are doing. Had absolutely ages to sort it.
Also mate, bang on. Speakman talks a very good game - which was fantastic when things were good. Thing is, people hold you to account on the words you say. At a club like ours, the spotlight is never off. Prime example is his waffle about head coach succession planning. Sounded great at the time. Looks a bit like BS now.
Speakman is a way over promoted assistant academy coach - Dodds and Proctor unsackable under his sporting director position. None of them elite level players by any stretch. Is my opinion. No proper c.forward for 2 years - it's a million miles away from where we could be with some competence in key positions at the club.
A lot won’t like it but I agree with you there. Don’t expect us to compete any time soon in this league unless there’s changes.
Pretty cool appointment that, think he was close to getting the Swansea job earlier this season as well. Long time Brendan Rodgers assistant and recently with Ange. I'd imagine Birmingham will play some pretty attractive football under him.
Plenty of experience as a coach/assistant. Can he do the business being the main man? We’ll soon find out. I do fancy Birmingham to bounce straight back…
