Sorry if this has already been posted but just realised it’s 40 years ago today since that crazy, horrible, night at Turf Moor when we REALLY went close to promotion.
Not sure anyone has been closer?
Needing to win by 3. Going 0-2 up fairly early…then nothing.
Missing promotion by goals scored after the same goal difference, and those horrible ****s from Bramall Lane going up instead. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

Turning up at YEB as a 16 year old. Getting on a coach that you could only get in if you looked big enough (I found out later as someone wasn’t let on)
Getting dropped off a few streets away from the ground.
The usual 80’s shenanigans, made more interesting by Blunts there too, and a large presence of Police dogs.

Mad/Sad end to a season.

At least that’s my unchecked memories of it anyway

Amazing to think as an ancient 74 year old it was more than half my lifetime ago. Yet I can remember that night, even though I wasn’t there, more clearly than things from a couple of years ago

A mate who is not a fan called me and said he had £50 bet for City to win 3-0 so did I want to go through, no tickets, but off we went. Even though it was only 2-0 and obviously lost his bet he still enjoyed it. Strange night all round but that was a great city side. V unlucky on the night.
 
I was a student in Leeds and managed to persuade housemates to drive over. It was also my 22nd birthday, so should have been aware it was the fortieth anniversary. It was a surreal situation on and off the pitch.

Grandad duties and then work, which I didn’t envisage when I retired a couple of years ago!
Wouldn’t change anything though and have just returned from a holiday in Crete, so it’s actually a relief not to be eating and drinking!

That feeling of disappointment - so near and yet so far - those twattish blunts fans (seemed to be more of them than Burnley fans) singing away at the end and the sight of Brian Marwood, for the last time in a City shirt, crying when he came back onto the pitch

Mass support for City that night during the temporary rugby boom glitch, yes a huge dissapointment but my tears were quickly dried as that great season was bookended by promotion the season before and promotion the season after and the immediate appointment of the great Brian Horton as player manager, unforgettable days to be a City fan.

Was 21. Great trip over. Lots of swall for the journey ( went with Dill for those who know him) then the strange one off of 3 different sets of supporters( and mobs) outside the ground. Police must of been delighted. Dills eyes lit up with excitement. Great match. 1-0 to us in the first minute set the tone for a lung bursting night of chanting. Wasn’t to be in the end and to be fair we should have been up already. Think we blew it with a home 0-0 but can’t remember the opposition. Great great days Football, young, fit girlfriend,weekend round city centre and the only responsibility I had was to lock the door when I came in( failed on that at times)

Can’t beat grandad duties, especially when they are young. Great times with them but they go home and you don’t have to do all the things like telling them off for not doing things, chiding them about being tidy, schoolwork etc. Did you enjoy Crete? Eldest lad, his partner and grandson and granddaughter are going there in July.

Yeah, Cant beat grandad duties! You have the time you never seemed to quite have as a dad.
We had a lovely time. Weather was a bit mixed. (maybe went too early), and the hotel we chose didn’t have a lot to do locally, but food and drink package was great!
We chose somewhere with easy access to Chania, which is amazing. It’s a Venetian harbour, which is a must see.

That is near where my lad is going. Told him to visit Chania, know someone who spent a couple of years there working a few years back and he really rated it. Handy for Knossos as well.

Went to Crete a couple of years ago. Parked up in Chania and walked around the seafront around a high wall to be confronted with the whole of Chania harbour. One of the most gob-smacking things I've seen because it just came out of nothing. Lovely place. I've been told since that the Chania end of Crete is the 'posh' end, as opposed to the Heraklion end...

We had exactly the same experience a few years ago. Arrived by bus, and walked around a high wall (looking seawards, was that to the left of the harbour?), to be confronted with the harbour. Had exact same feelings, as you say it was totally unexpected. Remember from our first visit, the old town is amazing too. That was the reason for us choosing somewhere from which Chania was easily accessible. It was a gloomy and stormy day this time, so we never quite got that same wow factor (plus we knew what to expect). We were sat in a harbour side cafe, and every few minutes having to lift feet off the floor when we’d get a huge swill of water breaching the harbour wall.
We hired a car last time, and I suspect the Heraklion end is less developed and so more old Greek?
I love the Greek islands.
