Hillsborough trial: Men acquitted as judge rules no case to answer

Two retired police officers and an ex-solicitor accused of altering police statements after the Hillsborough disaster have been acquitted.

Retired Ch Supt Donald Denton, retired Det Ch Insp Alan Foster and former solicitor Peter Metcalf had denied perverting the course of justice.

Mr Justice William Davis ruled they had no case to answer.

It appears it is illegal for policemen to tamper with evidence used to convict people, but not illegal for policemen to tamper with evidence used in a Public Inquiry. Which makes you wonder what the point of a Public Inquiry is.

The charge against the officers was perverting the course of justice. The judge got the decision right on that, they hadn’t in a legalistic sense. But depending on what your definition of ‘justice’ is, it could be argued that tampering with statements in this arena was morally disgraceful and was perverting the course of social justice. As is often the case, the CPS appear to have got the basics wrong and gone for the wrong charge, they were warned of this and ignored it. I’m pretty sure that there must be some way that - if they did tamper with statements - there must be some illegality in there somewhere. Millions spent on this and it got nowhere.
 
Sadly, I suspect he's only of many more.

Hillsborough’s 97th victim: Liverpool fan Andrew Devine dies 32 years after life-changing injuries in disaster

A Liverpool FC fan who suffered life-changing injuries at Hillsborough has died, 32 years on, with a coroner recording him as the 97th victim of the disaster.

Andrew Devine, 55, was badly hurt in the tragedy at the FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989. He spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair and needed constant professional care.

“It is with great sadness and a sense of immense loss that we can confirm that Andrew Devine passed away yesterday at the premature age of 55,” his family said in a statement released on Wednesday night through Liverpool FC.

“Our collective devastation is overwhelming but so too is the realisation that we were blessed to have had Andrew with us for 32 years since the Hillsborough tragedy.”
