Only watched highlights, and not read it on this thread so far, so shout out to Begovitch who started the winning move.
From wls After the leaving the pitch at the end of the game, Cifuentes and his players went back out to salute the home crowd again. “I think it’s important to create this togetherness,” the Spaniard explained. “We were very quick (to leave the pitch) and we have another game on Monday, but five minutes more won’t damage anyone and I think it’s important that players enjoy the atmosphere, which was amazing today once again.”
Well yes....but Begovic is becoming a bit of a worry. Twice yesterday at least he didn't come for balls punted through that his defenders thought called for him to come for. Both times there was a scramble, and we got away with it He also received a pass back from Cook, that again he was unready for and managed to stick out a foot to prevent a comical and probably soul destroying o.g. Later on he did stand up strong and big on another break through, he didn't bring him down ( a couple of bonus points for that) , the player went round him badly and shot rather than centred ... Biggest let off of the first half. We will be get a new goalie next year...definitely
Thx for the balance Beth. As I wasn't there I was just relying on highlights. I'm sure we'll have a new stopper next season.
Yes he’s dangerously slow coming off his line to sweep up. Twice yesterday he nearly cost us a goal through not being quick enough. Though as you say, did well not to bring down Stansfield. I’d be amazed if Marti hasn’t already got a new keeper for next season lined up. Would like to see Walsh but he’s not going to get an opportunity until we’re safe
I agree that he can be a liability, but this season his experience is probably outweighing everything else considering the position we're in. I only saw the Cook passback and imo that was a very poor pass by Cook.
Begovic is a definite liability and supposedly our highest-paid player, along with Cook. We'll need to find a replacement for next season.
I just don’t believe those pay figures Strolls. These blokes were essentially out of work when we picked them up. No way are they paid more than £10k a week and even that is robbery. I reckon Dykes is our highest paid non loan player, and Hayden overall. Cook is our best CB since Nelsen though.
Cook is excellent, but I actually think Clarke-Salter is as good, if not better. Certainly the best CB pairing we've had for a very long time.
Sure Dykes is our highest paid player too. New contract made him so, and I am sure it was "agreed" to sell him if possible this summer
The other bloke who has made a massive difference is Hayden. Almost invisible as he goes about his work but a huge dose of stability and security. Plus we now have a decent bench which can influence the game. New keeper and the perennial goal scorer (12-15 will do!) for next season and it could be fun. Although large numbers of this squad are out of contract in June.
Looking at the after-match celebrations on the pitch, I'm hoping some of them decide to stay on and be part of the Marti project - there seems to be a strong bond growing between him and the squad. Financially we may have to sell a couple, but some shrewd additions to the squad could make next year interesting....but we need to concentrate on getting enough points this season first
