Echo and the Bunnymen at the Roundhouse last night. An excellent, perfect sized venue, but the band didn't quite live up to the surroundings. McCulloch's singing voice sounded great but his scouse drawl in between songs was largely unintelligible. Bizarrely, the band did about 40 minutes, went off for a 20 minute break, then came back for another 40 minutes, followed by an encore. Still, nothing ever lasts forever, does it? Enjoyable, but not brilliant. All the shadows and the pain are comin' to you.
Tried to get tickets for their gig in Glasgow for Mrs SM, but it was sold out... sounds like we missed out on a dud though
Probably be better on the politics thread, but the new three-parter docu-series by Darren McGarvey has been on BBC Scotland over the last few weeks, culminating last night in an excellent episode on the state of the NHS. The series covers the Justice system, the Education system and the Health system. As a change from his normal programs, Darren goes around different parts of the UK to see how each system is coping under the different local authorities. If you've not seen any of his stuff before, you may be better of with subtitles as he has a very strong Glaswegian accent! He's been through a lot of **** and come.out the other side, raised on a council estate in a rough part of the city, but he's very clever and has a strong sense of social justice.
Now's your chance @sb_73 Sign up for presale here... https://www.nickcave.com/newsletter/ Excellent support artists too....
I’m already on the mailing list mate, should get the presale access. Pondering if I want to make a trip of it though…..
It’ll probably be Birmingham, but I’m always enticed by the idea of a bit of travel. Could come up to Glasgow it’s a Sunday…combine with a Tons/Hibees trip…..could see if I could entice our little friend to come.
Off to the Albert Hall tomorrow for The Who's second Teenage Cancer Trust gig. I'll let you know what I make of it, but if they're as good as they seem to have been last night, we're in for a treat.... The Who review, Royal Albert Hall: Sixties legends prove themselves the most hardy and unworn act of their era (msn.com) Squeeze are supporting. Can't wait.
What a night! We'd been invited to join friends in the talkSPORT box, with free food and booze all evening. Squeeze played for an hour, and if we'd been kicked out when they finished I'd have said we'd had a great time. But then The Who came on and were just brilliant, doing a two-hour set, including a guest appearance from Eddie Vedder.... Full set list here.... I Can't Explain With Orchestra: Overture Amazing Journey Sparks Pinball Wizard We're Not Gonna Take It Who Are You Eminence Front Band Only: The Kids Are Alright You Better You Bet Substitute My Generation Cry If You Want Won't Get Fooled Again Behind Blue Eyes With Orchestra: The Real Me I'm One 5:15 The Rock Love, Reign O'er Me Baba O'Riley Daltrey's voice was sensational - the man's 80 ffs! Just a fantastic experience.
Sounds a cracking evening - we went to see The Smile last night at the Armadillo in Glasgow (checked out my seats for the Nick Mason gig, gonna have a good view). The Smile is the side project of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, along with jazz drummer Tom Skinner from Sons of Kemet. An outstanding evening of musical genius....I'm not normally a fan of seating at gigs but the layout in the venue means everyone gets good views, and the acoustics were superb. I know the music wouldn't be to everyones taste, but these guys, whilst not in their 80s like Daltrey and co, have still been knocking out great music for over 30 years. As an aside, Stevie Nicks is playing in Glasgow so had a look for tickets for Mrs SM....**** me! Cheapest tickets in the ****test part of the hellhole that is The Hydro were £177.50, ****ing scandalous. She can get to ****, no-one is worth that
Prices are moving up Steels aren’t they. Seen a few local prices moving up to venue pricing which is scandalously disappointing.
