Yeah this is it for me too. If Ipswich don’t go up, they could be in serious bother next season as they’re paying a lot on wages. More than the ffp or whatever it’s called will allow over the 3 year period (I think that’s what it is anyhow!)

This is one of the most discussed tactical things and has been for a while among coaches. Set pieces are one of the controllable things for a coach, whether defending or attacking, so we like to talk about winning an advantage.
Corners are fundamentally about creating numerical advantage when coaching. Then turning that numerical advantage into one of space control. An attacking team can never have a numerical advantage because there is always one guy taking the corner and we assume he is isnt a goal threat. So you start from a min 11v10. Then the keeper doesnt really go forward so it is an 11v9. That puts the odds right in your favour. Then it is a bit like chess. If I put a player up will they drop 2 back, leaving my 2 man numerical advantage? Not always if your defender is rapid, because he can delay the counter attack. So you might find you now have only a 1 man advantage and if they take a short corner you could end up matched up numbers wise. If you leave 2 up, will three drop in? Etc.
One of the biggest changes here in recent years is the ball playing keeper. Look how high they go for a corner. They are a sweeper at that point. So attacking coaches are now thinking I can leave a 1v1 in outfield terms to defend because I have my sweeper keeper. Suddenly a defensive coach is back sweating about numbers and thus space.
As a coach there is massive pressure not to concede from a set piece. Fans go mad, media unpick the setup and go daft on zonal v man to man.
I am not a data man, but I would bet the odds of conceding from a corner ourweigh the odds of a breakaway goal.
It all adds up to a bit of fear, but also a pretty logical approach to winning that particular passage of play. Not saying I agree with it. I generally have 2 men between the edge of the D and the centre circle to pounce and try to counter. But I do appreciate the coaches mindset in having all back.
I remember Chelsea a few years back left 3 up front 1 on the centre spot, a 1 on either wing on the half way line, can't remember who they were playing but they brought both their 2 big centre half back and 2 full backs.I can understand a big striker like Stewart coming back to help out but I'd certainly be leaving Rusyn/Mundle/Roberts (when fit) on the halfway line. Imagine if we left Clarke up there! Teams would keep half a dozen men back.
Some of the most dangerous opposition to defend against from corners are CB as winning headers is their bread and butter, so if you can leave players on the half way line it could stop that threat
First time I noticed a manager leaving 2 players up was Jack Charlton when he was at Boro. Both on the halfway line, one wide right, one wide left. The plan was simple clear the ball from the corner by hitting the ball long towards the corner flag. Teams had to keep 3 and sometime 4 back to cover..
We could be really outrageous and leave one on the halfway line and one in the middle of the oppositions half. Obviously he would be offside but he wouldn't be there to receive the ball in the first instance, but would then become involved as we break.
DCM role in a post... i had a few 'arguments' when yann was here and people kept saying he did nowt so why is he on the pitch, once he was gone they realised.
if there is one position that cries out for a 'battle hardened vet' then it is CDM and i remain convinced it is the main position we need sorting.

Ability wise we're no where near them. But we're trying to do things the right way. Thye have thought "wheres the kitchen sink".
We could quite easily have become Charlton who had big plans for promotion, stadium expansion and redevelopment ...
... now they don't even own the stadium and look like they're on their way to the 4th division.

Watched the 90 mins last night, and again, thought we played a lot better than some reports suggest . We have a fine squad at our disposal and a bit more care should be taken over team selection, substitutions etc, as not for the first time this season, the team which finished the game looked and played a lot better than the team which started it. Rigg and Hemir both look ready to make contributions now imo, but just why Rusyn was taken off and Jobe left on at 1-2 needs to be looked at again by those involved in the decision making, whoever they are..

That’s their owners in a nutshell. They’re risk investors I think or something like. They’re spending what they know they can realistically make if they get to the promised land! They will, I think, then look to sell the club at a very big profit. Just an opinion mind from what I have read about them.
I think it’d be funny to see them fail and implode!!

The Jobe situation worries me. He’s speakman’s find and apparently they know each other well (family wise). He should’ve been taken away from the first choice role a long time ago. His form dipped. When he was a sub, he came on and looked a different player. He’ll never be a striker imo which is apparently where he was playing on Saturday!
