Insurer Liverpool Victoria, which insures 2.8 million British cars, found 54% of UK motorists have been the victim of vandalism and one in ten has experienced this type of crime in the past 12 months.

Keying is the most common type of vandalism and accounts for 33% of these crimes. Smashed windows make up 26% of incidents and slashed tyres represent 10% of the damage. Bent antennas, smashed mirrors or windscreens and graffiti are also common.

Where's worst

There's bad news for drivers in the London borough of Enfield, which was identified as the top car vandalism hotspot. Next up, South East London and Bournemouth experienced the second and third highest levels of vandalism.

Where your car is most at risk:
1. Enfield
2. South East London
3. Bournemouth
4. North West London
5. Brighton
6. Southall
7. Romford
8. Southend on Sea
9. Rochester
10. Edinburgh

BOURNEMOUTH!!!!!!!

They must be having a ****ing laugh. The average age of residents around here is 103.

The only explanation can be that we have the oldest vandals on the planet.

Never had a problem in Sunderland or Newcastle. Had to stay in Washington once, parked my car in a well known brand hotels car park, 2 hours later I get a call from reception to say its been broken into. Police say the people who did it on CCTV, said they were known in the area but based on the evidence a conviction was unlikely.

The wing mirror thing annoys me, it happened to my car once when I was coming out of work, luckily it was caught on CCTV and another member of staff witnessed it. The culprit was caught and made to pay £150 for a new mirror and fitting, so it goes to show its always worth reporting these things

Wasn't so long ago Sunderland had one of the worst car crime records in the country....

Sorry to burst anyones bubble, but it was rife...Yet never ever had a problem when i lived in Surrey.

I would like to see the figures to back this up, because it certainly has been relatively low in Sunderland for many years now, and when it was higher, basically during the Thatcher years, it was the same all over the North of England and Scotland, as well as the poorer areas of the south, due to the very high unemployment rates etc.

Would have thought no 1 for vandalism would be Newcastle especially if you had an SAfC sticker in the window

Apparently, when I was living in Sunderland we had our car window smashed in about 20 times in the ear, thats one of the reasons why we moved to jersey. It was in Silksworth, not sure if that was a good or bad area tho.
