Spot on. Every footballer is talented. If they weren’t then they wouldn’t be professionals earning thousands a week and being signed for tens of millions. It’s always going to be hit and miss with signings. For every Gil there is a Sarr and every Bentancur & Kulusevski there’s Ndombele & Lo Celso
Bayern’s submitted a formal bid for Dragusin that’s slightly higher than ours but with no players included.
At least if we do get this over the line it shows how highly regarded he is. I’m desperate for us to have Micky and him as our centre backs for Sundays game, otherwise I’m fearing the worst
I also think we just had a better plan for Sarr’s development, with him being loaned straight back to Metz for a full season. Gil came in and was given the 11 shirt straight away which implies we thought he was more ready to play a role, which in hindsight was misguided as he’s still not there some time later, despite subsequent loans.
£25m + Lamela equals close to £35m, which is more than twice what Sarr cost. £10-15m is perfectly reasonable for a club of our means to gamble every year on young potentials. Significantly more than that and eyebrows should be raised. I'd also argue that there wasn't an urgent need to strengthen the wide attacking positions. We already had Son, Bergwijn and Lucas and had Clarke out on loan. Other areas needed far more urgent attention and I feel the net result of signing Gil was that we had £25m less to use elsewhere and a weaker squad overall following Lamela's departure. I've never understood why you're such a big fan of the Spaniard as we've seen pittance from him to suggest he can make it at this level.
Werner will wear the number 16 shirt. The only lower numbers available were 1, 2 and 6. He normally wears 11, but that's currently being worn by Gil.
It’s impossible to make that sort of statement. Lamela’s market value was probably closer to 0 because injury prone players like that generally get released at the end of their contracts as no clubs are willing to buy them. It’s easy to say in hindsight that adding him in the Gil deal was a bad decision but ultimately it got a huge chunk of wages off of our books on a player that was available for roughly a third of a season. It’s not about being a big fan of Gil, it’s about acknowledging he’s a talented young player who might go far in the game, evidently now it almost certainly it won’t be at Spurs but I’d happily sign 100 more Gil type deals, you’re bound to find more gems than duds.
I think Gil can go far in the game but to me he is not suited for the physical premiership which is a shame as you see a glimpse of what he has but all to often he gets out muscled on the ball . I would love to see him given time to develop, does Ange have the patience, not sure
Dragusin Watch Wouldn't it be nice if one of Dumitriscu, Popescu or Chiriches talked to the press about how he'd immediately fit in at Spurs...?
Somebody may wish to explain to the Lunatic Fringe that if Bayern are trying to gazump us for Dragusin now, they likely would have tried to gazump us for Dragusin last week Because they are currently having great difficulty understanding such a concept - and don't get me started on their grasping of how, with Genoa (not "Genua", Plettentwerp) accepting ours and Bayern's bid the choice of who to join ultimately comes down to Dragusin...
That’s generally been my view too but I think it’s probably time to admit defeat that his potential won’t be realised here. Werner’s only going to push him further down the pecking order and he was already struggling to get minutes despite the injuries and absentees we have at LW. Sounds like Solomon’s back in a few weeks as well so it’s looking pretty bleak for him.
The fact we've been openly linked with LWs since last month also suggests that Ange doesn't see Gil isn't a good fit and wants someone who is
I’m all for the club being a bit mor ruthless with players. Gil hasn’t had many games but he’s been at the club long enough now to have made some sort of impression. If the man who sees him everyday doesn’t think he's good enough then time to go. Solomon isn’t my cup of tea but if Ange prefers him to Gil then definitely time for a move for the Spaniard.
The thing with a bunch of our squad is Conte being a total wazzock granted several players the benefit of the doubt due to his abysmal handling of at least half of the squad Djed Spence is the best example of this, as a chunk of our fanbase was holding him up as a player overlooked because Conte was an inept trilobite who stubbornly refused to play him, and Gil certainly fell into that category too (as did Dele under the ubermensch) Funny how having a manager who can be a total bellend makes it harder to be decisive on cutting players loose as there isn't the data of whether they can be an asset for future managers or not
The fact several players have failed to impress multiple managers speaks volumes about them. Gil could well go on to have a good career and I hope he does but it doesn’t look like he’s going to make it at Spurs. Same could be said about Spence, Reguilon, Skipp and others more.
In Conte’s case Spence and Gil never got the chance to impress him - even when it made sense for them to get at the very least a sub appearance here and there In Gil's case the issue is he just lacks the physicality to thrive in the PL, as he is easily bullied by defenders (as his cameo against Wolves made painfully clear) and he lacks that something to get around it, be it the raw pace to leave defenders in the dust, the close control to leave defenders going the wrong way so he creates an opening, or the sheer bloody mindedness to get past defenders no matter what There's clearly a player in there, and his head is certainly screwed on straight, but we really should have had him studying video of Chris Waddle so he'd have a chance of creating some end product
Conte would have seen them in training everyday though. It’s not the same as proper game time but if you’re not impressing in training then you can’t expect to get minutes on the pitch.
