Sounds like we’re gonna recall Scarlett - good decision. Got to send him to a club that actually needs him.

Can see what that’s done to Parrott this season after sending him on one or two dodgy loans prior. Been really impressive for Excelsior.

Club really does need to put more thought into some of our loan decisions at times.

I generally agree with you, we have made some odd selections. But I’m not sure what’s happened with Ipswich was something that was being predicted. McKenna has excellent rep as a coach but the club was just promoted from League 1, and they’re doing very well. Hard for a young player to break into a team performing better than expected. I think everyone expected them to struggle a bit more and that might bring opportunities for someone like Scarlett to play and develop under a progressive coach, so the move made some sense.

He’s not started a single game for them though. We shouldn’t be sending players out without the promise of starting games. If they underperform and lose that spot then that’s completely fair enough but to send him somewhere that couldn’t guarantee starts from the off does nothing for his development in my opinion. It’s been half a season wasted for him.

It wasn't helped by us subbing him on against Fulham, meaning he was cup tied in matches where Ipswich might have given him more minutes

Yeah very frustrating in any case. Hard to guarantee starts for a player in Scarlett’s position though.

If we recall him he will have to be contented with either academy teams or on the bench for the first 11. As mentioned because he was subbed on against Fulham in the CC he cannot play for a third club for the rest of the season. Ange likes him so maybe being around him will aid his development.

Perhaps recalling him opens up the possibility of Veliz going out on loan?

That’s what I’m hoping, these occasional 3 minute cameos aren’t helping him to adjust to English football. Have Scarlett take his spot in the squad and let him go out in the second half of the season and rack up some games (and goals hopefully).

IIRC we can loan out Scarlett again - but not to an English side

Don't suppose there's any openings in the Belgian league?

I don’t think we can, so I suspect he’ll be in and around the first team squad. We should try and find Veliz a loan in England. Keep him acclimatising to the language etc

Here's the legalese from FIFA's website

Players may be registered with a maximum of three clubs during one season. During this period, the player is only eligible to play official matches for two clubs. As an exception to this rule, a player moving between two clubs belonging to associations with overlapping seasons (i.e. start of the season in summer/autumn as opposed to winter/spring) may be eligible to play in official matches for a third club during the relevant season, provided he has fully complied with his contractual obligations towards his previous clubs. Equally, the provisions relating to the registration periods (article 6) as well as to the minimum length of a contract (article 18 paragraph 2) must be respected.

Might be getting the wrong end of the stick here, but there's a few leagues who allow us to stretch the definition of "overlapping seasons", off the top of my head
- MLS (February-October 2024)
- J-League (February-December 2024)
- Argentine Primera League (May-December 2024, which puts the kibosh on rumours of Veliz being loaned to Boca Juniors in January just a tad)
- Brazilian Serie A (April-December 2024)
- Allsvenskan (April-November 2024)

Obviously not ideal, but it does appear that we could loan him to an MLS club for half a season and have him back for pre-season

This could be possible but what’s the point really. We’re not going to learn anything about Scarlett playing in those leagues and he’s going to get opportunities for game time in January and probably beyond.
