Danny Guthrie has admitted he would love to remain with Newcastle, despite being unsure as to whether his place in the team is secure.

Just a month ago, he was left out of Alan Pardew's matchday squad to play Tottenham, but since then, there's been a huge turnaround in fortunes for the 24-year-old midfielder.

He stepped into the injured Cheik Tiote's boots for the last three games and has proven to be a stalwart in the heart of the Magpies' engine room.

Although the former Liverpool man could end up leaving St James' Park in the summer on a free, Gutherie remains sure that his future remains at the North East giants.

"There's no bitterness. The manager picks the team and that's that," he told the Daily Mirror.

"It's been a frustrating few months. I was injured in pre-season for the second time in a row and that makes it really difficult. You feel like you're always playing catch-up.

"It's a bit of a double-edged sword, watching Yohan Cabaye and Tiote do so well. It's frustrating because you're desperate to be playing, but it's also great to watch them playing like that, because you want the team to do well.

"You can still take pleasure from watching them do a great tackle or play a really good ball. Some of the things Cheik, in particular, does, you just have to sit back and admire."
Deal

"The priority has been nailing my place down in the team, then thoughts can turn to talks about a contract. I'm desperate to stay though."
Danny Guthrie on Newcastle
Quotes of the week

Newcastle are expected to open talks on a fresh deal, and Guthrie added: "It's brilliant to hear talk about a new contract. There's been no rush to this point.

"Even though I'm out of contract in the summer, it's been important for me to concentrate on playing well.

"The priority has been nailing my place down in the team, then thoughts can turn to talks about a contract. I'm desperate to stay though.

"I really enjoy it here and have loved working under the manager. I've had a few in my time! It seems like he's (Pardew) here for the long haul, so hopefully I will be too.

"It would be brilliant to become firmly established as a week in, week out Premier League player.

"I'm at a good age now, I'm settled and I feel as though I'm ready to start hitting my peak as a player."

Good to hear, to be honest. I'd be worried he'd want to go elsewhere to get first team football. Which, to be fair, he deserves. Glad he wants to stay to battle for a place.

He's an excellent 3rd choice CM to have. And his recent performances have backed that up.

Just hope he goes out there today and plays a blinder!

Great news, he is perfect cover for Tiote & Cabaye. He has proven he can play both of their games very well and will keep them on their toes for their space plenty too.

If Guthrie keeps playing like he is now he may be more than just good cover and will give Pardew a real headache, but obviously he still needs to prove his consistency. Three more performances like his others this season and he will make himself almost impossible to ignore.

He seems a good lad - many people hate him justifiably for his assault on ***an but that seems out of character more than anything. Not the best in defence but can put a tackle in all the same, and a great passer of the ball with very underrated technical ability. Great option to have.

You know he's decent when we're not too worried about not having both Cabaye and Tiote available for selection..

That's a massive compliment to the way he's played <ok>

well i think pardew is a loyal type of manager in the sense that if a player comes in and performs at the top of his game he'll keep him in and i think this also generates the way we are playing i.e. players playing out of their skins for each other and the team to stay in the team ...which is all good :)

Hate to rain on people's parade but many players have said they want to stay but have ended up leaving.

Would really like him to stay though, decent back-up, maybe even first team material if he continues playing as he is.

Like others have said; very decent back up and I hope he stays. He it still only 24 as well.

This. I've always been a Guthrie fan since the day we bought him back in July 08'. Very good technically and can defend too.. good box-to-box CM when on form. <ok>

So if Sammy plays a blinder if he starts as rumoured, he'll be playing next week too. Sammy in the starting 11, means Pards will want to start Shola <whistle>
