Today they call it fly half! in my day I played "Stand off" inner or outer centre, winger either side or full back, could do 100yds in around 13 secs / 220 yds in 24 seconds [ relay ] position 2! but 26 seconds in start line to finish. At 15 & 16 played against Bridgwater Albion [ flood lights , ONLY got beat 3-0 in one of 5 games against them! nearly won it in last minute, forward pass about 5m from line !] Minehead barbarians / Old Morganians . County triallist at 14 but broke leg 2 weeks before selections! Played for Keynsham first team away games [at 16/17 /18 odd games because coach was leaving and some had not turned up/ ill/etc] Played in COLTS team 3 years, but also got picked for the 2nd team a number of times. Strong point was kicking, halfway line! and speed [ my weight from 14 to age 20 ish was about 14 stone 90 -92 kg........ enjoyed it. but did play in school football teams pre age 14 ... rules have changed immensely since the 60's
Well done Wales another great performance. For my sins when I was 16 I was asked to trial for Bristol but back in the day I turned it all down. Back then the money is not where it is today and the game has come on leaps and bounds financially. Started as a prop then wing forward as I was quick use to run 100 200 400 metres. Use to peel of the scrum and scored many try’s
Didn’t realise In your day the two codes had split, I thought when you were young Rugby and football was still one game
Back in the day the front row were built like Chilcott. The odd exception but the 2nd row were and still the big bu**ers.
I was 5'11 and approx 15 stone give me a sprint i was gone-give me a long distance race i would struggle.
I was 5'10" sprint yup I was fast, by no means the fastest over 100/ 220 from the blocks in my age group [ +/- 2 years ] but had the rugby skills!
My dad played for Dings and Bristol in the late 1950s. Dings have their new stadium just off the M32 just as you come off the M4. Dad proudly took us on a tour of it and showed us his team photos. https://www.dingscrusaders.com/
