Well I thought the daylight robbery one was true as I've read it elsewhere, but maybe it isn't. I've read the rule of thumb one too, but also about a thumbs thickness being an old inch. Got to prefer the one about the stick though! Anyway, I'm settling for them all being close enough!
Nearly had a heart attack in the pub last night. This Muslim comes through the door shouting Allah, Allah, Allah. Was expecting an explosion but then he said allav'e a pint. Stuttering tw*t.
OK, but rather than a long and off-topic ( in an off-topic post!) ramble, a link below to a clear explanation a few of the words/phrases. https://www.wordorigins.org/big-list-entries/rule-of-thumb?rq=thumb https://www.wordorigins.org/big-list-entries/golf?rq=golf https://www.wordorigins.org/big-list-entries/sleep-tight https://www.wordorigins.org/big-list-entries/honeymoon https://www.wordorigins.org/big-list-entries/mind-your-ps-and-qs http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-wet1.htm but Daylight Robbery might be close to the truth https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/daylight-robbery.html And an extra comment, the idea that GOLF was an acronym (made from initials of other words) can be quickly dismissed. Acronyms in English didn't appear until the late 19th and 20th centuries, so any origins or explanations like this should be regarded as dubious and need to be closely looked at.
