If Suarez is racist for calling Evra black, does that mean Evra's racist for calling himself the black gazelle? I mean whats he trying to say, that gazelle's can't be white? He could have been the fast gazelle or the prancing gazelle, but he chose to bring race into it, Isn't that racist?

No not really as stating something to be black is just stating fact. If the word black is used in a derogatory manner then it could then be construed as racist. You ****ing black **** for instance, with the word black included to emphasise and insult. Black gazelle however is just saying that this Gazelle is black.

******, on the other hand, is just flat out plain and simple racist and accepted as so. By ALL nations and cultures. There is no way on earth that Suarez or anyone else should be able to hide behind the fact that they claim it's ok to use this word in their country.

That of course is IF he said that word, therein lies the whole crux of the argument for me.

Frank,

Even the Senegalese have been accused of racism by Evra.

'Evra revealed that he had suffered racial abuse from supporters of the Senegal national team for choosing to represent France internationally over his native homeland.'

http://demo.joomsport.com/index.php/player/4/1193

I may be taking it out of context but that article seems completely reasonable and believable to me ?

This isn't so much about what Evra has said anymore anyway - The FA believe they have the evidence and that it's not one persons word against the other or they wouldn't have made the charge ( well you never know with the FA ).

Exactly! It continues to allow a grey area into what is racist & what is not. I believe the problem occurs quite understandably in trying to balance stamping out racist abuse and convincing people of different ethnic backgrounds to be proud of their colour.

Colour shouldn't come into it. We as a society decided the colour of ones skin is irrelevant. So when promoting cultural diversity & pride it should be about language the arts food etc not "yay I'm black/white/yellow"

Evra should promote his Senegalese/French heritage and so should his team mates. Or his speed/athleticism. Not the completely irrelevant fact that he has black skin. NowI'm in no way saying that he is "asking for it" just that he has created an opportunity for doubt where there doesn't need to be any.

Racial issues should be clear cut. Back to my ginger scenario. I'd make a complaint just at being abused in the office. I wouldn't automatically go straight for the ginger part.

If however I'm told I didn't get a job because I'm ginger then I consider it racism and complain along those lines.

In that case you're just as bad as you're nick name is ginge!!! IMO verbal racism doesn't and cannot exsist by the very virtue that some race's can use word's that if said by other race's is deemed racist, which in its self is racist as the 2 races are being treated differently. Racism to me is in actions whereby people are treated differently/detrimentally because of there race, being offended by what someone say's to you is a totally different and less serious matter.

The ONLY comfort in this whole debacle is that we are all agreed upon the principle that racism, sectarianism, etc. has no place in football in particular and life in general

I was'nt trying to score points with that link Eric, just pointing out that the issue of racism seems to follow Evra wherever he goes(allegedly).

You're quite right and the trouble with this one is that it won't solve anything. Unless it is proved without any doubt that Suarez DID racially abuse Evra. I think otherwise it'll just blur all the boundaries of what is acceptable.

Forgive the pun but this needs to be a clear cut black or white case without leaving any grey areas.

Actually i think we are agreeing in principal. By using race associated words to promote myself or friendships I risk allowing someone with racist intentions of abusing those words in a negative way back at me!

And I wasn't suggesting that the colour black or the word as a description be banned; the exact opposite. I was saying it should stop being used to promote or abuse identity race thus it it is just what you want Dave: a description of colour alone.

Personally I think the truth lies somewhere between these two points:

Suarez casually throwing a 'racist' phrase at Evra without any real racist intent - careless but not evil.
Evra being extremely sensitive on this issue and construing some abusive banter from Suarez as racist - understandable but excessive.

I would find it hard to believe that any player who has spent any time at a top team these days can truly be a racist when surrounded by players of all backgrounds who are pretty much equally good at the game as they are.
Evra's background probably makes him more likely to see things as racist - France isn't quite as integrated as the UK which is why they made such a big deal out of the make-up of their WC winning side, as if the striking exception somehow proved that widespread prejudice doesn't exist in France.

Living in the Czech Republic, I see racism all the time. Xenophobia towards their larger neighbours (somewhat understandable, given their history) and outright prejudice against certain minorities is widespread - it's a difficult cycle to break out of, especially when no-one really sees it as a problem.
One encouraging sign was in their playoff games with a player of Ethiopian descent in the team - these are the real things that start to breakdown the stereotypes, when people start to see positive role-models from diverse backgrounds.

Football in the UK has certainly helped with this in my lifetime.

That was revenge Haaland injured Keane a few years before that. Paybacks a bitch as they say.

So what you're saying is its ok to go out and deliberately injured someone as revenge, so if Suarez is found not guilty and he wants revenge on Evra for lying then will Suarez be within his rights to break Evra's leg, for example?

^^^^ This^^^^ <ok>

Evra didnt try breaks his leg did he and Evra's not lieing. Wont surprize me or bother me if someone goes in hard on Suarez though in the furture.

I didn't say Evra was lying in that particular instance, It was a hypothetical situation.

I don't find that hard to believe at all, not in the least.

Just as there are fans out there who are happy to cheer their own players who are black/asian/whatever, but then use racist insults against opposition players. Some people are just scum.

That's a different story, I'm talking about working with people day-in day-out. You have to be a special kind of asshole to still be racist after that.

just to clear up the whole haaland thing - haaland did not injure keane - keane tackled haaland from behind and injured himself - haaland was annoyed as he thought keane was feigning the injury so he wouldn't be punished for the bad tackle

i wish the fa had come out and said the exact wording of the charge against suarez - the whole thing is vague which only leads to more conjecture

just hope ivor biggun is not the sitting judge on the day as the death penalty would surely be imposed

Right.

So it appears that Suarez called Evra a nickname used by his united team mates.

Doesn't that mean, if it is a racist name, that the entire united club should be done for using the same term?

No; I thought not.
