Realistically, a good cup run for us is what, the fourth round? Would anyone look back with great fondness on a glorious trip to the fourth round, or even remember it? It sucks to go out here, but we're already staring at about 50 competitive matches this season. That's rather a lot. We can't play our best XI for cup matches unless we're intentionally playing a weakened XI in the Championship to accommodate it, and we should not be doing that.

Dpends who we play on the way. I can't remember what round we got to or who we were knocked out by in 2019/20 but I certainly remember winning 4-0 at Fratton Park.

In fact my 3 favourite games of the last 5 years have all been cup matches. You don't have to win the cup for it be enjoyable.

The biggest blame for last night is not any individual player. It's on Martin. He picked the team. He put Perraud at CB (wtf), he selected three teenage debutants.

Was a bit of an arrogant team selection and hopefully this acts as a wake up call. Let's face it; better it happens in a cup game than a league one.

Ironically, it was the 3 teenagers who were the only positives!

The other thing I'll say (as I always do when this conversation comes up) is it why is it such blasphemy to consider giving kids some playing time in the league?

Find it weird that this can ONLY happen in cup competitions. Guess they'll have to wait another 5 months for their next opportunity.

This. This. This.

Why can't Doyle, for example, get gametime in the league? Offered far more than Aribo last night and even got an assist.

One of the best post match interviews I’ve heard from a saints manager.

Pulls no punches at all, takes responsibility.

I really like this guy and I believe he has what it takes to turn us around. Hope I’m right for once
I agree, think he’s the real deal. Really hope it works. No hiding, true to his word, and let’s be honest, a horrible amount of uncertainty regards transfer to deal with. If we can get a couple of players that are committed to him and the system (sorry Swansea) then that will help!

Agreed, pleased you approve of him O's, let's all hope that your post doesn't come back to haunt you.....my only concern is that I started drifting off halfway through thinking that he sounded similar to David Brent!

I hope this game is as important to Saints immediate future as our defeat to Brentford the season we got promoted from League One.

Russell Martin's interview really gave why we were in the Championship in the first place. Some of these players who won't work with the squad have to be moved on. Laziness can't be tolerated and sounds like Martin won't. Unfortunately his team selections are too easy now.

For me the really telling line, and one mentioned by all of our recent managers, is that these guys in our squad TRAIN really well. What Martin has noticed - but was missed by Selles and the other one - is that some players train well but wimp out in matches. All last season we played the guys who trained well even though they offered nothing on match day. It has taken RM one game to say no, training isn’t enough.

We don’t need JWP or Lavia in the championship. We do need a striker though…
We need all of our best players. I don’t think any of our strikers are our best players. If selling the likes of Lavia and JWP means we can replace them with quality then that’s great but I’m really not confident we can do that

First comment on here post match.

I learned a while ago to not lose my **** over a football match, there are a lot more pressing things in life to get worked up about…normally stuff I can control.

That said I am a tad pissed off with the result, but it is not the end of the world. Not everything is binary. We are not amazing or crap. We can be somewhere in between.

Last night is hopefully a positive as the players (and fans) won’t think we will walk the league, without actually trying. We are not a Premiership side.

Rationally, we were never going to win the cup so it doesn’t matter we are out, but emotionally it does. There is no point in competing if you don’t think you can win.

Am I alone on here in actually not being anti SR? Sure they made loads of mistakes last year, but I can’t see any Asset stripping or walking away. I would much rather have them than Gao (who as it turns out wasn’t a bad owner). They are doing their best to keep the Crown Jewels, but if they have to leave, it wil be a good price.

Think we need a reality check. We are a Championship side, with a bottom of the premiership talent. No confidence and used to losing. That probably puts us in reality as a mid table at best side. IF we can shake off the gloom and doom and actually implement what RM says, we may just turn out to be a top 2 side. Need to work at it though.

Im still looking forward to Saturday as maybe we will turn up.

Didn't Shaw, Sims and Reed all make their debuts in the PL? And Walcott in the Championship?

James Bree: ""We’re a Premier League team, really, against League Two opposition, no disrespect to them, a result like that shouldn’t happen especially the way it did."

**** off mate. "We're a premier league team really." No, no we aren't. In case you hadnt noticed we got relegated.

If that's the attitude and arrogance of the squad, no wonder we failed to turn up tonight.

About time someone stated the obvious. We aren’t going to walk the Championship. Once the dross has been shipped out then maybe we will have a fighting chance with players that want to play for the manager and badge - not just the money.

We really need to get over the selling hump and into the buying phase. Time to split training into the "staying" and "going" camps, and focus on the future?
