My father took a landing crafts into Sword beach. The stories he told me were horrific, the young lads were mowed down as soon as he dropped the door. At the time he was only 20 at the time. I plan on going there next year for the 80 year anniversary.On this day in 1944:

My first and lifelong hero in football even before he came to play for us. I actually couldn't believe it when he did come to us. An absolute gentleman and it was so sad when the game he graced treated him so badly towards the end.
When you have the likes of Pele writing about him in his memoirs, you know how special the Gentle Giant was.
I actually played against him - although. In some respects, it happened by default ….
Charlo was managing the Swans youth team and they had reached a final.
As there had been a bit of a gap between their last game and the final, Charlo wanted a match before the final.
So they arranged a match against BP Llandarcy - as it was the Swans youth side, the Oilmen picked a young side which included yours truly. (I was 18 or 19 at the time)
As it happened, the Swans Youth goalie failed to turn up so Charlo went in goals: they beat us 3-0

I was on holiday in Aberaeron, I was gutted I couldn’t go to the game.
I was playing my first game in Canada and when someone told mete score after the game - I wouldn't believe them!
