The rise of the Far Right in Europe as a reaction to ultra-liberal policies, unlimited immigration, loss of national identity etc is a horrific thought. I'm about as far right as you are communist - I dunno though, perhaps you are...?
You're always quick to point out advances made by the far right as if it's a good thing. The Conservatives were expected to win easily in Spain. The reason they didn't was the spectre of the the far right, which brought out the left of centre vote. A positive result.
It’s better than a right wing win but seems likely they’ll have to go to the polls again soonish and short term the PM has limited ability to do much.
I point out the advances of the far right as a caution against ultra liberal policies like those that have been followed in Sweden and now it's cities are dangerous, and it's governing body has moved considerably to the right, but hopefully moderate. The AfD is making advances in Germany. That should be a clarion call to moderate parties to reform. In Spain, the result probably is positive in that Vox's support receded. But Sanchez is surely a wounded politician. It would be like Gordon Brown staggering on supported by Nick Clegg.
I think Spain is a rather unique case, where many still have memories of a fascist dictatorship and the constraints that brought. However as the older generation die off, the youngers might not be so wary of its dangers. Europe as a whole, seems to be moving further to the right, so it seems (And that’s not me slagging off the EU or Europe…just my thoughts)
