Good news Col about the biopsy....

Are you having the full hip replacement of the resurfacing job? I had the resurfacing done 13 years ago and the improvement in mobility was remarkable....Still all OK after all these years touch wood.... the only advice I'd give is follow what the surgeon tells you to do to the letter, you'll be on crutches for at least 12 weeks but it will be at least 6 months before you begin to feel you can walk normally..... Good luck Col....

My surgeon didn't think resurfacing was right for me.
He says recovery will be around 6 weeks. Full recovery in around 8 weeks.

Well if he says 8 weeks he obviously knows best, just don't be surprised if it takes a bit longer as it is major surgery.....

So.....turns out all is good!
Had 8 weeks of seeing a consultant following high PSA tests.
Then an MRi scan followed by a prostate biopsy, which was particularly unpleasant!
Anyway, had the results on Tuesday and all is benign.
Another blood test in 6 months time.
Now I have a major operation this coming Tuesday to have a hip replacement.
Funnily enough, with everything else going on I haven't really thought about that!
Have to say that the NHS has been absolutely brilliant throughout. I was particularly fortunate in that I was able to use the urology department at a top Oxford hospital where everyone was superb, particularly the consultant.
So.....onwards to a new hip and at least 6 weeks of gradual recovery!

My plumber mate had his done and he was back climbing roofs 3 weeks later!

l know they’re not all are the same but they have come a long way from the previous 12 week programs of yesteryear.

Yep. I'm determined to do all the exercises etc to speed up recovery.
I think recovery times have come down over the years, but I'll report in over the coming weeks.

Don't be going too ballistic with the exercises, especially while watching the Ashes. If you jump up suddenly as we drop Smith in the slips on 0, your liable to be walking like Douglas Bader for a few months !

Finally my partner and I have a replacement doctor (GP) after we both lost ours about a year ago and were placed on a never-ending waiting list. We met our new doctor swimming at our local university pool and he kindly agreed to take us both as new patients as a couple. His practise is located at a small govt health centre in a quaint village about a 30 min drive away from the city where we live. This Dr. is likely in his early 70's and did his residency in that same time period in California, in LA, in a poor neighborhood where his emergency medicine residency consisted for the most part of gunshot and knife wounds! We have already had our first consultation and he sees us individually, then as a couple. Our medical records are en route to him, mine in a file box, with is okay for him, my partner's as a 230 page pdf digitized record, but problem is this Dr. does not have a computer! Dr. scheduled blood and urine work for both of us and he actually phoned us together on vacation on PEI to review the results (all good!). So he is an old school Dr. who is obviously not going to be around forever (like the rest of us!).

So.....bit of a rollercoaster today.
Went in at 730am, but have had sciatica type numbness in my other leg and pins and needles in the foot.
Surgeon delayed the operation ordered a scan. If too much back damage, that would have to be sorted before the hip replacement.
Anyway, the scan showed a little degeneration, but no more than would be expected.
Could mean recovery will take a little longer.
Anyway, got sliced open at 330pm and now high as a kite on pain relief!!

Hear, hear 4ever. Although a little more time recovering is not a great price to pay if you get a significant improvement in your health and movement. Best wishes for that Col.

I was meant to receive a telephone call yesterday afternoon from the Stroke team at Epsom hospital. It would've been the first time anyone from there had been in contact with me since I had them and the heart attack last October. I waited for 3 hours but no call came. When I called the department to ask why, it went to answerphone , asking me to leave a message ! ****ing marvelous. Whoever picks up that message , will hopefully be aware that I have Tourettes aswell.

I didn't choose Epsom, they called me as it was the nearest to me with a Stroke department as St Helier no longer has one. I've far too much going on to be able to move at present just to receive a phone call ! I will be near Epsom hospital next week, and if I haven't heard anything from them by then, I will be popping into the Stroke ward and having words.

My experience with the NHS has been excellent over the last few months.
I think it very much depends on your postcode and maybe a little luck.
Our experience with care for Mrs Rangercol's mum is a very different story however.
We've struck lucky with the private care company that come in 4 times a day, funded by the NHS, but overall the system is broken.
