Disappointing dismissal by Crawley as was looking in good touch. Nice opening partnership has set things up though. They got through that first 20 overs of the new ball which is first aim of the openers and if can score runs along the way then sorted.

he's sent out to be aggressive and he's coming down at lyon. the lad has scored quickly and not stopped scoring til he's made the error.

thats what asking for 5 and 6 and over generated.

its better, as you've said many times, than prodding 10 and getting out anyway

Lyon looks like might have done himself some damage. Unlucky for him and aus is that’s the case as always a threat, especially on day 5 when batting last.

First bowler to play 100 consecutive tests and suddenly gets injured.

    disaster that.

why they are looking so much I don't know.

it's crystal clear to me on first view and second view was obvious

Not sure why England are constantly trying to him them.

Obviously have a way of playing and scoring runs but surely you take the situation into consideration. Australia haven’t looked like getting anyone out with the seamers pitching it up, so why give them a chance by constantly trying to hit the short balls and risking a top edge.

Let them bowl short and just leave it, tire themselves out and with no Lyon to rotate one end will be knackered for the last hour of the day. Still so much time left.

Not getting 4s from these shots so it’s such a high risk shot for such minimal reward.

Do wonder if root is thinking he has to play this way because that’s the way the team is told to play and if he goes and gets a boring 60 from 160 balls is that going to cause issues internally so he’s forcing it more?

England should be seeing 3 and 4 fielders desperate for thst pull shot and really just laugh at the efforts.

let them tire themselves out bouncing it over your head.

root has always scored quick enough.

honestly there's now a lot of work to go do now and stokes is sat there on 11 from 40 odd knowing exactly what is needed so I really doubt root is under pressure to slash at stuff like it's t20

England rotating strike reasonably now as the bouncing has eased off.

Brook on 40 which is as good as you could expect from the struggles we saw under the short ball.

    England trail by 144.

Well good days cricket. Definitely englands day with knocking off those 5 wickets and then a good opening partnership to set us up.

little wobble in the middle but overall a good days work.

Lyon’s injury doesn’t look good and although don’t wanna see injuries, could be beneficial for england for this test and possible the rest to come.

England should be looking at 500 here and get themselves into driving seat going into second innings

I don't think there's that many runs left in the batting order.

parity would be an amazing result.

they do til they get out. 144 runs is a lot to ask but there's 30 odd in the tail

really the first hour again is crucial

    you.know what I mean.

they actually have to stick there.

we saw Brooks absolutely struggling under short ball for example.

the new ball is not due for 19 more overs.

England should by rights be thinking of exploiting that after getting themselves set for a half hour but I'm fairly sure form the very first ball they will be swinging like it's t20.

19 overs at 4 an over gets you pretty close. who would be left to face the new ball? who knows.

15 overs cos you are bowled out at 6 and over is 90 runs

I personally think stokes is big enough and ugly enough to stand there and not score and not get out but we will just have to wait and see.
