Stephen Lawrence: How the Met Police failed to spot suspect Matthew White

The most notorious racist murder in British history has never been fully solved, but everyone thinks they know who attacked Stephen Lawrence.

Five names.

David Norris and Gary Dobson were convicted of murder a decade ago. Luke Knight and brothers Neil and Jamie Acourt have been suspects for 30 years. All three have denied being involved. Neil Acourt and Knight were acquitted of murder in 1996.

Duwayne Brooks, who was with Stephen on the night of 22 April 1993, said there were six attackers. His descriptions of the man who led the attack and first struck Stephen - along with other eyewitness accounts - do not match the appearances of the five main suspects.

Who was the mystery figure?

After the Met stopped looking into Stephen's murder three years ago, I decided to investigate myself.

The BBC can now name a sixth suspect - Matthew White.

I traced witnesses, saw police documents, and uncovered new evidence that shows how officers mishandled investigations relating to White.

The BBC has found that witnesses told detectives White had said he was present during the attack, and has uncovered evidence that shows his alibi was false. For the first time, police surveillance photos from 1993 are published, in which White is depicted bearing a striking resemblance to eyewitness descriptions of the unidentified attacker.

But at key moments the police failed to pull together all these pieces of evidence on White.

It’s still going on by the way……..the anarchist lot I know have been having issues with moles for a long time……..and lots of suspicious suicide cases have been happening

didn’t we pass an act silently not so long ago where undercover agents have rights to torture or kill without prosecution

Ok, so in France they shot a ****ing 17yr old for a standard traffic stop.

I have a colleague from France, we were in a car together for 8hrs once chatting about everything and he told me about these armed cops in France who do traffic stuff.

Said they were nasty and aggressive and armed to the teeth

I thought he was chatting unbelievable bollocks in truth, like in France? Not a chance.

He was telling the truth, blows my mind.

There's a video circulating where a cop shoots a kid (as he was about to drive off I think). I never get the mentality of cops in these type of incidents, the sort of stuff you see in America as well, you have their vehicle registration, you've already eyeballed the kid, why do you need to do anything to stop him driving off. You just go pick him up later once things have calmed down. I think more thought needs to be put into how to immobilise a vehicle rather than putting holes in humans.

Exactly. Blow the tyres. They'll not get far.

This is exactly it.

I've been watching a ton of cop dash cams recently and a few times I've seen the radio operator say to stop pursuit, "no need to chase them down"

Cops often refuse. Why should I? Kinda mentality.

It's straight forward psychology isn't it. They are wearing a uniform, that gives you a bit of power, you have a gun, they are powerless and you want to push that authority.

When he speaks back? You see red, become furious, wanna **** them up. They try to drive off, you shoot that ****, how dare he run! They are out of their ****ing minds to be honest.

No cop in France should have an assault rifle

I expect all the kid did wrong was driving underage (18) in France, here in the UK he would have been legal (17). It's just mental, at worst he would have got a slap on the wrist, fine and some points - that could have been dealt with even if he did just drive off. Cops all wear cameras these days, so they would have evidence he was in the drivers seat. You know what kids are like, they just panic.

Here? They would have called his Mum, to inform them their child was in a **** ton of trouble, he's been driving your car and even sped away from a cop!

They wouldn't be calling to say her son had just been shot by an officer
