Who is Zan Vipotnik? Celtic £3.5m transfer target's lethal firepower attracting Euro interest

    29 MAY 2023

    https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/spfl/scottish-premiership/who-zan-vipotnik-celtic-35m-27015402

Ange Postecoglou knows he'll need more firepower for next season's assault on the Champions League.

The Celtic manager knows his squad can cope domestically albeit there's always room for more quality and Football Scotland revealed earlier today that Slovenian hitman Zan Vipotnik is one player on the club's shortlist as they look to strengthen for next term. There's been no official bid as yet but the Hoops are monitoring the 21-year-old closely as are a number of clubs around Europe following the season he's had.

It is believed, should they look to lodge a concrete offer, it could cost as much as £3.5million for Maribor to be coaxed into doing any sort of deal after the player's agent confirmed interest from Glasgow.

He said: "Yes, there is interest from Celtic for a summer transfer but there a lot of clubs who want to sign Zan when the window opens."

But who exactly is the attacker and what has he done in his early career? Football Scotland tells you all about him.

    Who is Zan Vipotnik?

Born in 2002 the youngster has had a strong start to his young career having made his top team debut with Maribor back in January 2020. He came off the bench to score the winner in that game at home to Bravo in the Premier League.

That season he also managed four more appearances for the club before he was sent out on loan to Gorica.

He made 18 outings on loan there, scoring just once.

His next move was another loan - after returning to Maribor and featuring 17 times, scoring three times - a hat-trick against Triglav where he would then be sent off.

Eventually he'd return home to Maribor once again where he'd prove to be more prolific than ever over the course of two seasons.

He banged in 26 goals in all competitions to receive the interest currently shown.

He has also represented Slovenia at every age group including the first-team where he's scored once in two games. That strike came against Kazakhstan and helped him become the second youngest ever scorer for the nation.

How has he fared this season?

The striker has enjoyed his most fruitful campaign to date this season.

He notched 20 goals in just 30 appearances in all competitions despite Maribor's poor third spot finish in the Slovenian PrvaLiga.

Vipotnik has admirers around Europe but Celts are in as strong a position as they can be considering they've registered their interest early.

The Slovenian season started in July ‘22 and he didn’t score many until the October. Amazing scoring record from then on.

I've never even heard of this kid. But I did post a link up about a week ago to all the golden boy nominees and wondered who we'd sign off the list this window as a joke.

Looks like it should be our starting point now <laugh>

I doubt Potter would buy a house in Leeds if he was offered the job. They usually either drive home or the club finds them a temporary home (rent)

How long would you give a 20 yr old who has played once? His highest level of playing is National League North

Protection for the club compensation wise probably and if the players are impressing they'll probably get a better offer In 6 months would be my guess

If they turn out to be decent then your run the risk of losing them every season. I get that it's a double edged sword.

These contracts look purely to me to be padding out our U21 side. I don't think we have any ambition of either of them becoming first team players, nor making money off them. Both will be released next summer and sign for a League Two side.

Sorry to be such a pesimist - I am in a bad mood like :D

Gotta remember the bookies aren't Sunderland fans haha. Objectively, as things stand, we've gotten weaker since last season. No Diallo and Stewart probably on his way out. None of our signings are first-team ready except maybe Jobe but he's very young and will likely only be a sub at first.

As fans we like to think all our signings are ****-hot... Realistically, if any other team had signed any of them (bar Jobe) we'd all be saying "who the **** is that? <laugh>"

P.s. not saying it's right or wrong, just that will be the perception of neutrals. Personally I trust our recruitment team that the new lads will come good. Plus our young team all now have an extra year's experience behind them.
