Glen Hoddle was superb for Monaco and helped them to win the French title.

Chris Waddle won three titles with Marseille and reached the European Cup final during his four seasons at the club.
He also came second in their Player of the Century award.

  3. Okay, we can narrow the search then:

Any players in the PREMIER LEAGUE era who've done well for themselves abroad?

Had G-d blessed Owen Hargreaves with a different body, I think he would've become one of the best players in the Bundesliga.

Beckham did well at Madrid, but never really improved on what he already had at Old Trafford.

And now my mind's gone VERY blank.....

How many English players have actually gone abroad during the Premier League era, though?
The money here is so good that it's rarely worth leaving.

  5. True PNP, but my point is that even the big spending clubs on the continent (Real, Barca, AC Milan, Inter, Juve, Bayern, PSG etc) whose wages match those of the bigger EPL clubs, have never really attracted British talent. If and when they have, the move has almost invariably been disastrous!

Steve Archibald completes a British trio who transferred to Barca too.

David Platt did very well when Serie A was the top league in Europe, he played for 3 clubs there.

I think the reason we don't do well abroad is not so much a football one, more a cultural thing, we don't settle well away from home generally. Its alright going on holiday abroad, but staying there...fuk that...with all those foreigners...nah, not for me either.:D Mind you, where I live its beginning to feel like that anyway! :emoticon-0101-sadsm

Perhaps Notso's picked a point here that's often overlooked.
When a lot of foreign players make moves, they already speak at least two languages, so they will either know the language of the country that they're moving to or they'll have experienced learning a new one.
That's probably not true of the vast majority of English players.

The game's quite different in most countries, too.
The style of football in the Bundesliga would make an easier adjustment than La Liga or Serie A, but most German clubs wouldn't match a Premier League side's wage level.

    I like this.
£35m is not enough for Bale. However, Andy Carroll is a £15m player at best. Its not his fault his employers are off their rockers. If we were to sell Bale to Liverpool then it would be £150m :D

It has to be remembered that Liverpool's "act of insanity" was only made possible by another such act by Chavski, i.e. paying £50mm for a Spanish statue.
Obviously, this doesn't, in any way, justify Liverpool trying to outdo The Chavs by being even more loopy - just another example of what goes around - comes around. Ashley obviously knew they had the money, were desperate for a replacement, and accordingly, held them to ransom.

Bale has a 4 year contract worth a hefty 75k / week. He is 22 years old and is regarded as one of the best left midfielders in the world right now. Goodness only knows how much more he can improve within the next 4-6 years. If Barcelona are really interested in buying Bale, they'll need to pay at least £50 million considering that Levy has no reason to sell......

He can hand dig the footings for the new stadium, thats about the only reason I'd let him near WHL again.

The only good reason I can think of for even letting him do that, is so we could have the pleasure of chucking him in before they lay the concrete. Probably more use to us at Liverpool, though.
