You can go all the way back to the days of Brian Clough and say he bought the European Cup, with the record transfer fee of the time of £1 Million for Trevor Francis. Without him the youngsters may not have won it.
Can't use Porto as an example they got Brazilians no other European teams outside Portugal could due to no work permits for them.
