Bought my first pint in a pub in 1980…when I was 13.
Was 30 something pence then (can’t quite remember exactly but I recall the uproar when it went over 40p)
Denis Healey took advantage of decimalisation. There used to be discussions when beer and cigarettes went up by 1, 2 or 3 pence old money. He then stuck that amount on in the new money which was of course a lot more. One budget I think he stuck 5p on a packet of cigs which was a huge increase. My dad packed in smoking when Players Navy Cut and Senior Service hit 50p a packet.
