This is a reputable source as one can get I suppose, RM is off then? Will Piroe be joining him, he can take his keeper for sure!.......... Link: https://theathletic.com/4534487/2023/05/19/russell-martin-southampton-manager-next/
Russell Martin is not travelling to the United States to meet Swansea City's owners as previously planned. The 37-year-old is the leading contender for the Southampton job. Martin is in the final year of his Swans contract and was set to hold talks with the club's ownership group in Washington DC this week. He wanted assurances over summer transfers, plus clarity on his own future, his players and staff, however, he has not made the journey. "I think everyone wants clarity on what the situation is," Martin said after Swansea's final day win over West Bromwich Albion on 8 May. Martin is the leading contender to be named as Ruben Selles' successor at Southampton following their relegation from the Premier League. Several bookmakers now have Martin as the odds on favourite to make the move to St Mary's Stadium. Having been relegated from the top flight, the Saints are aiming to appoint a new boss swiftly following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Former Scotland defender Martin led Swansea to 10th place in the Championship last term having finished 15th in his first campaign at the club. - Ian Mitchelmore/BBC
Meh ! Used to the same old crap every may ! Takes most of season to get any good then feks off for rinse n repeat with another journey man !
As my son has just said: “Football is such a funny world - 10 games ago he was on the verge of being sacked and wouldn’t have been on many teams radars - now it looks like he could be a PL manager in 18 months time.”
The Guardian is now running with the story, looks like this has some legs guys, I must say I'm not that fussed about him going, to be honest, but my worry is the players we will lose especially Piroe, it's tough finding natural goal scorers at this level........ "The talks were detailed and he has a clear vision of where he can take the team and the type of players he can bring in that he feels will help them get back to where they need to be. From everything I've heard of Martin in the past, I think he's a good character for a challenge like this one." - Saints-Dean Jones We must have given him permission to talk to Southampton, Yes?...............
Well you can't blame RM, can you? The last window was everything you need to know about the owners and where our immediate future lies. Whether he'll do any better at Southampton is debatable but one thing's for sure - he'll have money for transfers.
His end-of-season unbeaten run will probably also make him odds-on to go to Leeds, Everton, Leicester, Forest, Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Watford, Norwich and Chelsea.
Makes sense for the owners (their point of view) to cash in wherever and however they can. Sad for the soul of the club (supporters) though. Another thing... if RM does have the resources at Saints to shape the squad how he wants, then he has no excuse if he fails with "it's a work in progress".
